COMBINED DESK AND SEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,982, dated July 2, 1895.

Be it known that I, MICHAEL D. NELoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Seltupporting Combined Desk and Seat for School and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

The several features of my invention and the various advantages resulting from their use conjointly, or otherwise, will be apparent from the following description and claims.

In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this application, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure l is a View in perspective of a desk and seat embodying and illustrating my Fig. 2 is an elevation of that side of the said seat and desk which is farthest from the beholder in Fig. l, with the boX F removed. Fig. 3 is a section showing the angie-iron.

A indicates the top of the desk, preferably made of wood, as shown. The desk is preferably provided with a front board A2. One side of the desk is supported by the continuous angle-iron B B2` B3. B constitutes one leg, B3 the other leg, and B2 the portion connecting the leg B to leg B5.

The desk rests directly upon the portion B2 of angle-iron and is secured thereto, preferably by screws, in any well-known manner. Each of the legs B B5 is bolted inward, as shown, and are connected together at or a little below their mid-length by a circular brace B5. The lower end of each leg B B3 is provided with a foot B4, consisting of angle-iron bent in a horizontal position, substantially as shown. Preferably the two feet B4 B4 of these legs BB point toward each other, as shown. These feet are thus out of the way of the person entering between the desk A and the chair when about to occupy and use the same.

The seat of the chair just referred to is indicated by the letter D and its back (of any suitable form) by the lcharacter D2.

Under the near sideof tho chair, Fig. 1, is a suitable support, as the angle-iron E E2 EB-E and E3 constituting, respectively, the legs and E2 the piece connecting the top of the legs E and E3 together. Each leg is provided with a suitable foot B4, and these feet are preferably formed, as shown, out ot the same angle-iron as the leg by bending the same in a horizontal position and are preferably turned toward one another, so as to be out of theway.` p

The legs E and Ea are curved toward one another, substantially as shown. The curving of the legs E3 and E, as shown, affords more space and hence greater facility to the operator for entering between the chair and the seat, especially when the seat is located close to the desk, as must be the case in crowded rooms and where the seat is fixed in a stationary manner to the floor. In such cases the seat must be sufciently close to the desk to bring the chair in position for easily and conveniently using the top A of the desk in reading, writing, doc.

The curving of the legs B and B3 are of the desk, (the said upper portion being lettered C2,) and is then continued downward from the rear end or portion of the desk to just below the seat D of the chair. The said iron is then bent into a horizontal position, constituting portion C4, which extends to the rear of the chair seat and immediately under the same. The iron isthen continued downward in the form of a leg C5, terminating in the foot B4. The leg C5 is curved forward similarly to the leg E3 heretofore mentioned, and the foot B4 is constructed similarly to 'the foot B4 ot' the said leg B3 and is bent forwardly, so as to be out of the way. A brace C6 extends from the legs C to the lower end of the upright C3, where it is connected to the latter and then extends downward oblquely to the leg C5 in the neighborhood of the foot B4 of the leg, thereby forming a brace C7, and

at the point of junction with the said leg C5 t is suitably bolted thereto. All of this construction, consisting of the parts C, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, and C7, is preferably made of angleiron.

The seat D rests directly on the parts C4 D2 and is secured thereto by screws, bolts, or other suitable means.

Vhen desired, instead of angle-iron other descriptions of iron rods or strips may be used; but I prefer angle-iron, because it constitutes by itself a rod having great stiffness against lateral deflection in every direction, and at the same time affords convenient surface for the attachment of it to the top parts A A2 of the desk and the seat D of the chair.

The parts represented here by iron may be constructed of other metal or tough wood.

It may also be remarked that to the front side of the legs B and C there may be applied a board G for the whole or part of the distance between the top of the desk and the floor to prevent the scholar occupying the rear seat and desk from disturbing the scholar in the front seat with his or her feet. This will also be a good lateral brace.

When desired, the full brace B2 and the full brace E2 and the full brace C2 and the full brace C4 may be omitted, and all the portions of said brace sufficient to connect the desk top to its legs and braces and the seat to its leg and braces be retained.

In connection with this desk and as taking advantage of the construction hereinbefore described, I provide a receptacle for books, slates, duc., as follows: F is the receptacle, of which F2 is the outer side of the receptacle, F3 the frontend, and F4 the bottom thereof. The top of side F2 is fixed to the side edge portion of the desk top A and the bottom of said side is connected to the outer side edge of the bottom piece F4. The front piece F3 is connected at top to the desk and outerside to the piece F2 and below to the front edge of the bottom piece F4. The bottom piece is con nected at its inner side to the brace C6. The overlapping portion of the desk top from the leg C and braceC3 to the outer adjacent edge of the desk presents a very convenient opportunity for the location there of this box, as shown. The said leg C and braces C3 and C6 afford obvious means of support and division. When desired, an additional brace F5 may be extended from leg C to brace Chigher up,to more fully inclose the space devoted to this receptacle F.

The advantages of my invention are, most of them, obvious upon a comprehension ofthe foregoing construction. Some of these advantages are as follows: By means of the bracing shown on the side of the chair, Fig. 2, and already described l am enabled to dispense with one of the four legs of the table and with the adjustment of the same to the floor. lI am also enabled to make a combined structure of the desk and seat and so brace them together that each of them has a firmer face than either of them would have when standing alone.

The bracing C3 CG also furnishes a guard on that side of the seat, thereby confining the occupant within the proper limits of the seat. At the same time the entrance on the other side of the combined seat and chair is made very convenient of access, the chairv being placed near to the desk and working position in reference thereto, and the-occupant can enter the space between the chair and desk and occupy the chair without being compelled to lift the seat of the chair upward, as is now usually the case where the seat is fixedly located in working position near to thedesk.

In the manufacture the leg C on cross-snpports C2, brace C3, cross-supports C4, and leg C5 are preferably made in one continuous piece, while the brace C6 and the brace C7 are made in one piece. Thus the entire bracing on this side of the combined seat and desk consists of only two pieces.

What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. Acombineddesk and seateach supported on one and the same side by its own independent legs, and on the other side supported by the front leg C of the desk, rear leg G5 of the seat, horizontal brace C4 directly beneath the seat, and brace C3 connected to the frontend of brace C4and to the rear end of the upper part of the desk structure, and brace C7 extending from thelower part of brace C5 to the front part of brace C4, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

on one and the same side by its own independent legs, and on the other side supported by the front leg C of the desk, rear leg C5 of the seat, horizontal brace C4 directly beneath the seat, and brace C3 connected to the front end of brace C4 and to the rear end of the upper part of the desk structure, and brace C7 extending from the lower part of brace C5 to the front part of brace C4, and brace C", eX- tending from the front end of brace C4, across to front brace C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. A combined desk and seat each supported on one and the same side by its own independent legs, and on the other side by the-front leg of the desk, legs under the seat, and a cross piece C6 connected rigidly to the seat support, and to the front leg of the seat,.and

the brace C3, connected to the rear portion of f 5. A combined desk and seat each supported v on one and the same side by its own independent legs and on the other side by the front desk leg C, desk cross brace C2, upright brace C3 and cross brace C6 supported by the front desk leg, and the seat supportingleg whereby the rear portion of said cross brace C6 is supported, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

6. A self supporting combined t desk and seat, where on one side of the chair is supported on the leg C5, thedesk is supported on the leg C and intervening bracing consisting of the support as C3 from the. rear end of the desk to the front portion of the seat and a brace from the latter to the leg C5, supported on suitable supports, substantially as and for the purposes specilied.

7. In combination with the desk top A, leg

C and braces C3 and C6, the receptacle at the side of the desk outside of said leg and braces consisting of the side F, and front FB and bottom F4 connected substantially as described, as and for the purposes specified.

S. In combination with the desk top A,leg C and braces C3 and C, the receptacle at the side of the desk outside of said leg and braces consisting of the side F, and front F3 and bottom F4 connected substantially as described, and the additional brace F5 between leg C and brace C3, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

9. The combination of the fixed desk and seat, one side suitably supported, and on the other supported on two legs only, one from the table and one from the seat, and an intervening horizontal brace crossing from the leg of the desk directly to the seat, and then from the seat downward to the leg of the latter,substantially as and for the purposes specitied.

11. In a combination desk and seat, the combination at one side of the following pieces or braces, to wit: leg C forming the front leg of the desk, the desk having a top A, vertical brace C3 supporting the rear portion of the top of the desk and connected to horizontal brace C4 directly beneath the seat, the latter connected to the upright leg C5 forming the leg of the seat, the pieces C3, C4, C5, being integral,

substantially as and forthe'purposes specified.

l2. In a combination desk 4and seat, duly supported on one side, the combination on the other side of pieces or braces as follows, leg C forming the front leg of the desk, vertical brace C3 supporting the rear portion of the top of the desk, horizontal brace C4 directly beneath the seat and leg C5, thepieces C3, C4, C5, being integral, and horizontal brace G6 extending from the leg C to the braces C4, C3, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

13. In a combination desk and seat, duly supported on one side, the combination on the other side of pieces or braces as follows, leg C forming the front leg of the desk, Vertical brace C3 supporting the rear portion 'of the top of the desk, horizontal brace C4 directly beneath the seat, and brace C5 forming a leg ofV the seat, the pieces C3, C4, C5, being integral, and horizontalbrace C6 connected at its front end to theleg C and connected to braces C4, C3, and extending down into brace C", the

latter in turn connected to the leg C5, the

pieces C5 and C7 being integral, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

14. In a combined desk' and seat suitably supported on one side, the combination on the other ofpieces or braces as follows, the front leg C supporting the front portion of the desk, rear leg C5 supporting the rear portion of the seat, brace Ch sprung from the lower portion of the brace C5 extending diagonally forward to the front of the seat, vertical brace C3 supporting the rear end of the seat and in conjunction `with brace C7 to which it is connected, and cross bracing between the seat D andthe front leg C for preventing 'any tendency of the seat D to incline forward and spring out of position, substantially as and for the purposesspecified.

15. In a self-supporting combined desk and seat, the combination on one side of the leg B, cross brace B2 and leg B3, provided with feet B4, in one continuous piece, braced by the brace B5 for supporting one side of the Adesk top A, the chair provided with the leg E, cross brace E2 and rear leg provided with feet B, all in one continuous piece for supporting the adjacent side of the chair seat D, and on the other` side the front leg C, cross brace C2 for supporting the other side of the desk top A, vertical brace C3 from the rear end of the desk top to the forward portion of the chair, rearwardly extending brace C4 un-v der the chair seat and leg C5 extending from the rear portion of the chairseat downwardly, the said legs C, C5 being respectively provided with feet B4, all made in one continu ous piece, and the cross brace C6 extending from the ieg C to the foot of the brace C3, there united to the leg, and then extending downward to the leg C5 and there connected to the said leg, substantially as and for the purposes specified. y
