SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,847, dated July 2, 1895.

of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in.

window fastenings its object being toprovide a means whereby the upper and lower sashes can be adj usted independently of each other by a rod attached to the window casing, as hereinafter described.

The accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, are referred to and made a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowframe and its sashes having my improved fastener secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a verti cal sectional view of the same taken on line as a:. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing my adj ustable lock or catch.

In the drawings, A represents the window casing, B the upper and O the lower window sash, and D the removable rod.

E shows a holder or keeper, screwed or otherwise attached to the top of the window casing, in the lower part of which is.a hole 6' and slot 6 to receive and hold rod D.

F is a casting attached to the upper sash with a slotted end f to slide up and down on rod D. The side walls or cars f of said longitudinally slotted end f are provided with perforations f through which the bolt a is transversely passed, this bolt or catch being provided with a thin edged projection a which fits into any one of a series of notches D on rod D and is forced or pulled into these notches by the spiral spring I) placed against the opposite side of the slot and between it and a nut or head h on bolt a On casting F, is also projection e perforated for cord ft'o pass through. One end of the cord is attached to one end of bolt (1, and the cord is then passed through the hole in projection e. Then to the free end of said cord is attached the'ringor handle F, which when pulled operates the cord so that it disengages the bolt afrom rod D, thereby allowing the window sash to slide up and down on said rod. G, is a casting on the upper rail of the lower window sash provided with projections G to receive the lower end of rod D. The projections G are also perforated like the casting on the upper sash to receive a rod or catch or bolt m operated by a spiral spring n in substantially the same manner.

A cord P for raising and lowering the upper sash is attached at one end to the casting F and passes over pulleys h h aftixed to the window casing. Eyes may be employed instead of the said pulleys. The lower end of the said cord is provided with a ring or handle Q.

In using-my invention the upper end of rod D is placed in holder E with the other end of rod D elevated. When so placed the lower end of rod D, is placed in holder G, on the lower sash, and the upper end becomes firmly engaged with holder. E, and cannot be removed therefrom until the lower end is freed and elevated. When so placed holder E, of the upper sash and holder G of the lower sash slide up and down on rod D, engaging with any of the notches thereon according to position.

The upper and lower sashes of the window can be locked and securely held at any desired position, and no other window fasten ing is required. It can be used with sash weights or without them.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A bracket E attached to a window sash and provided with ears and a perforated ex tension e,in combination with a spring-bolt mounted in the said ears, a pull-cord attached to the said bolt and passing through the said extension, and a stationary notched rod arranged to be engaged by the said bolt substantially as set forth.

2. A bracket E attached to a window-sash and provided with ears and a perforated extension e, in combination with a spring-bolt mounted in the said ears, a pull-cord attached to the said bolt and passing through the said extension, a stationary notched rod arranged to be engaged by the said bolt and a cord for raising the sash substantially as set forth.

3.
