To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH OMEARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovomentin Removable Chair- Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide means for readilyinserting, securing and adj usting removable seats in the seat-frame of chairs, sofas, settees, and other objects.

The invention will be best understood by describing its principle as applied to a chairseat composed of a rigid stationary frame and having the seat or bottom member made by upholstering a frame and inserting the said upholstered frame within the stationary frame from below and carrying and holding it in place, so that it may be adjusted or re: moved at pleasure, by means of fasteniugs in the nature of cramps or clamps, comprising a stationary part applied to the stationary frame, and a movable and adjusting part applied to the upholstered frame and cooperating with the stationary part, all as I will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the several figures of which iike parts are similarly designated, Figure l is a bottom plan View of a chair-seat. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken substantially in the plane of line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken substantially in the plane of line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stationary and'movable parts of the fastening and adjusting device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an auxiliary of the fastening device, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of another form of fastening device.

The frame a may be of wood, and of any suitable construction, and preferably having the frame and for adjusting it therein, comprise a stationary part or keeper 6, fixed to the stationary frame, and made as a socket,

as shown in Fig. 6, said button or wear-plate maybe carried by the screw 9, the shank or tang 'i being inserted in a socket in the point of the screw and following the screw in its adjustment in the boltf. Two or more of these fastenings may be used at opposite points to secure the seat within its frame.

The projection of the screws through the bolts serves to press the seat-frame d tightly into the frame a, the resistance being taken up by the keepers. 7

Obviously, by running out the screws so as to loosen the bolts f, the said bolts with their attached screws may be removed and the upholstered seat withdrawn from the seat-frame for recovering or for any other purpose.

This simple and inexpensive form of seatfastening admits of the ready employment of stulfed bottoms for winter use and cane bottoms for summer use in chairs and other articles of furniture, the bottoms in every case being rigidly and securely fixed within the seat or other supporting frame. 7

Obviously, the invention is applicable not only to chairs but also to seats for settees and other similar articles of furniture. The invention is also applicable to those tables which have removable centers, the devices not only serving to secure the removable portion in place but also to level or adjust it as occasion may require.

What I claim is 1. The combination ofa stationary or fixed supporting frame, a removable portion arranged therein, and fastening for securing the removable portion to the frame and adjusting it therein, each fastening comprising a stationary part or keeper, a bolt, a set-screw ICO in said bolt, and a wear-plate to receive the thrust of the set-screw, substantially as deadjacent edges of these two members being complementally beveled, and fastenings for detachably and adj ustably uniting these members, such fastenings comprising a keeper, a bolt, a set-screw in said bolt and a wear-plate toreceive the thrust of the set-screw, substantially as described.
