GEORGE W. SHEPHERD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRIC GAS-LIGHTER.
fiPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,463, dated June 4, 1895.
Application filed March 13,1895- Serial No. 541,570. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SHEPHERD, a citizen of theUnited States, residing'in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Electric Gas-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.-
view of a burner Fig. 2 is a front Fig. 3 is a plan view Fig. 4 is a detached view showing the binding-post.
A is the fixture composed of the hollow stem A, the crown A the screen or gauze a, the air valve A and the holder A The fixture shown is a. Welshbach burner of the ordinary construction.
B is the gas cook, in the present instance situated below the air valve. On turning this cook the gas will pass through the hollow tube A and mingle with the air in certain proportions and will escape through the gauze at which point it is ignited.
O is a mantel supported above the burner and inclosing a portion of the crown.
I mount in suitable bearings secured to the holder, in the presentinstance, a rod D which is attached at its upper end to a segment d which passes partially around the burner above the crown, as shown in the plan view. I preferably make a spring segment but it may be simply pivoted at one end and free at the other end.
On the valve stem 1) is a segmental cam b,
which is directly below the rod D and upon which the rod rides so that when the valve is turned the cam will come into contact with the rod and lift it a certain distance, the rod being returned to its normal position by a spring 2 which in the present instance is coiled around the rod between the bearing and a collar which is detachably securedto the rod.
Passing through the crown A is a terminal I, having a portion 1', which rests over the free end of the segment at. This terminal passes inside of the crown A? and one end is connected to a binding post i" to which is also connected a wire leading to the battery. The terminal I is insulated from the crown and the binding post is insulated from the holder. On turning the valve the segment 61 is forced up in contact with the portion 2' of the terminal I and when the cam releases the rod the segment is drawn down by the spring creating the spark by which the gas is ignited.
It will be noticed that the burner is some distance away from the valve. Consequently to make the spark immediately on the turning of the valve it may not ignite the gas, but by making the cam on the valve as shown I move the segment in contact-with the portion 11 and leave it there until the gas has time to flow through the tube to the gauze. Consequently when the spark is made the gas is at the burner and can be readily ignited.
In order to detach the crown to replace the gauze the spring rod D and the terminal I are made detachable so that they can be removed with the crown.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the burner, having a crown and a screen, an electric terminal carried by the crown and a terminal ring also carried by the crown, one terminal being insulated from the other, with means for moving one terminal toward and from the other to make a spark, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the burner having a crown and screen, a segmental terminaIattached to the crown, an L-shaped terminal overhanging the segmental terminal and insulated from the crown, and means for moving the segmentin contact with the L-shaped terminal, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a burner having gas and air mixing tube, a crown, and screen within the crown, a shade holder, a segmental terminal attached to the crown, a rod secured to the segmentalterminal extending down through the shade holder, a spring tending to draw the rod down, a gas valve, a long cam on the gas valve adapted to raise the rod, and an L-shaped terminal overhanging the segmental terminal and carried by but insulated from the crown, the cam on the gas valve being of such a length that it will hold the terminals in contact until the gas has reached the crown, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the gas tube, the screen, the removable crown, a fixed terminal carried by the crown but insulated therefrom and detachably secured to the conductor, a movable terminal also carried by the crown and made detachable so that the head with the two terminals can be removed from the t0 burner for repairs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE \V. SHEPHERD.
