SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,909, dated May 28, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY W. ARMSTRONG, of Oakmont, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jacks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, which represents a side elevation, partly broken away, of my improved jack.

My invention relates to the class of jacks, and is designed to provide a simple, cheap and effective device for jacking-up rails or for similar purposes.

In the drawing, 2 represents the base,3 the hollow casing, and 4 the ratchetbar guided therein. This bar is provided with grooves 5 upon its sides, into which project fins upon thecasing, which hold the bar in place in its vertical movements, and at its lower end is'a projecting rest 6 for the rail or other part to be lifted. To actuate the bar, I provide an operating lever 7, which is pivoted in the easing, and is provided at its inner end with a pivoted pawl 8, having a downwardly-projecting tail-piece which may be engaged by a link 9, which is pivoted between downwardly projecting lugs 10 upon the lever, and which normally occupies the inoperative position shown in dotted lines in the drawing, but which, when swung into the position shown in full lines, engages a recess in the tail of the pawl. S, and holds the .pawl in such position that it will engage a second pawl 11, which is pivoted in the casing just above the lever-pivot.

In this position, when the lever is lowered, both pawls will be forced back, thus releasing the ratchet-bar, and allowing it to drop,

while in normal position the pawls Work alternately in the ordinary manner.

The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, since the device is compact, simple and easily operated.

An eccentric may be used in place of the link, and many other variations may be made by the skilled mechanic without departing from my invention; since What I claim as new is- 1. A jack having a casing, a ratchet bar movable therein, an operating lever, a pawl pivoted to the lever, a swinging stop arranged to engage thelever-pawl in certain positions, and a second pawl pivoted in the casing above the lever and arranged to be engaged by the lower pawl; substantially as described.

2. A jack having a casing, a ratchet-bar movable therein, an operating lever, a pawl pivoted to the inwardly projecting end of the lever, a stop. pivoted to a downward extension of the lever and projecting through the easing, and asecond pawl pivoted in the casing above the lever pivot and arranged to be engaged by the lower pawl; substantially as described.
