ELECTRIC CUT-OUT.
vSPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,588, dated May 21, 1895.

Be it known that I, JOHN R. HERSH, a citiaen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Out-Outs; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improved cut out for electric currents and though particularly adapted for electric cars, can be used in varions situations.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device which will operate by fusing a metallic link or conductor whenever the current reaches a certain'strength, and a further object is to provide a cut out comprising a series of such fusible links, so that when one is fused another can be quickly moved in its place, and a still further object is to provide simple but efficient means for moving the fused link out of the way and bringing a new one in connection with the members of the conductor wires.
With these objects in View my invention consists of a case containing a disk carrying a series of fusible links, and contact plates, connected with said links, a brush adapted to engage the contact plate, and connected with one conductor, a conductor plate or plates connected with the other conductor and contacting with the fusible links, means for revolving the disk and an indicator for showing which link of the series is in connection with the conductor wires.
My invention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts all of which will be fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 isa rear face view of the rotating disk. Fig. 4 is a face view of the rear section of the case, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the operating-lever.

circular case A, composed of the front section a and rear section h said sections being connected by bolts c. Binding posts B B are arranged upon the front section and to which the wire C O are connected. A conductor wire D extends from one post into the interior of the case and carries a brush E at its inner end composed of a series of thin metallic plates, and connected with the other post is a conductor wire F which extends into a hubj and connects with a conductor plate G carried upon the inner face of said hub.
Mounted within the case A and adapted to rotate therein is a disk H, having journals 71, projecting from each face and which bear in the front and rear sections of the case. A series of contact plates K are secured about the periphery of the disk and connecting with each contact plate is a link L of fusible metal, said links being arranged radially, and have their inner ends secured between. two metallic plates M, said plates contacting with the conductor plates G and thus establishing a connection between the contact plate K and the conductor wire F and as the brush E contacts with the plate K, a complete connection is made between the two sections of the main Wire O. The connection being thus established the current will pass from the brush to the contact plates, thence along the link L to the plate M and then to the plate G and conductor Wire F to the wire C. This will continueuntil the current becomes so strong as to fuse, the metallic link L when the current will be interrupted or cut out and will remain so until another plate is brought into contact with the brush. In order to do this l form the rear face of the disk H with a series of ratchet teeth N and pivot upon the rear journal h a lever O carrying a spring pawl P which is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth of the disk and rotate the same step by step as the lever is moved. This lever O projects outward between the sections of the case and connected with its outer end is a cord o by means of which the operator can work the lever and bring a new plate into contact with the brush. The pawl P is held in close contant with the ratchet faced disk by means of a presser plate p secured upon the inner face of the rear section b and this plate also ICC serves to press the disk for-ward and hold the plate M in contact with the plate G.
In order to hold the diskH in position while the lever is being retracted to bring the pawl into contact with another tooth I employ a locking pawl q, which is secured to thev rearv section of the case, and to return the'lever to" in Fig. l and the movements of said leverare` limited by the extent of the opening inthe case through which it projects.
- Now 'when one ofthe linksvbecomes fused and it is desired tore-establish thel current the lever O is drawn up by-cord o Abringing the next plate K to the left into contact with the brush E and this operation can-berepeatedas long as there are fusible links -left y to bring into contact.

The operations thus described can be continued until all the links have been used when the cut out is disconnected and a new one substituted or new links put in the same one.
This'device is usually arranged in a vertif cal position as shown inFig. l and can be fixed at any convenient place about the car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A l. In kan electric cut out the-combination with a case having conductor wires connected therewith, of a disk mounted to rotatetherein', said disk having a series of fusible metallic linksfupon one face, and a series of ratchet teeth upon the other, the lever and pawl and means for connecting the fusible links with the conductor wires, substantially as shown and described.
