.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following by a separate lever mechanism operatively connected to the 'main arm. This radius bar connection causes that portion of the body to which it is pivoted to swing in the arc of a circle around the frame connection; and in practice this necessitates the use of a long arm in order to secure a high elevation without an objectionable amount of horizontal movement. This movement, which always results from the use of the form of elevating arm referred to, is commonly arranged to be rearward, thus bringing the load somewhat nearer the desired point of deposit; but the slight advantage resulting is far more than counterbalanced by the danger of upsetting I the wagon backward if it is attempted to raise the body to any considerable elevation, and by the undue strain brought on the rear In my present invention I springs and axle. have had in view the changing of the construction so as to enable the body to be raised vertically, or with only a desired amount of f horizontal movement, to a high elevation; and to accomplish this with a minimum amount I upward and rearward around the joint 0, the

The invention consists mainly in the novel as a toggle-lever the upper member of which is extended and connected to a single-power mechanism, by means of which both members of the toggle-lover elevating arm are positively and simultaneously operated so as to cause a substantially vertical elevation of that portion of' the body to which it is pivoted. The opposite portion of the body is operated by means of a lever mechanism which is arranged and automatically operated in a mannor similar in the main to that indicated in my prior patent referred to. s

The main elevating arm is made up of two parts or members 0 and G which are jointed together at c and have their opposite ends 0 and b pivoted respectively to the body A and frame B,-thus forminga toggle lever. When the body rests upon the frame B the pivotal points 0 and b of the arm 0 O are brought close together and the members are nearly parallel. In raising the body above the frame the object is to produce a movement which will be the combined efiect of swinging the member 0 upward and forward around its pivotal connection I) with the frame, and at the same time swinging the upper member 0 position of which constantly varies on the arc X. In order to produce these two movements power must be positively applied to both of l the members 0 and C; and thislaccomplish in a very simple and satisfactory manner by extending the upper member 0 beyond the joint 0 so that it reaches below and to the rear of the winding shaft G and connecting the end d of this extension cl to the winding chain The turning of the shaft G to wind up the chain it will readily be seen tends both to positively lift the member 0' and to swing the member 0 upon its jointed end 0 thus lifting the forward end of the body in approximately a vertical line, the variations from which may be regulated as hereinafter described.
In order to raise the rear portion of the body I employ a lever mechanism substantially the same as is employed in my prior patent referred to. The bell crank lever E is pivoted at b to the rear end of the frame B and its upper end 6 is connected to the body at a, by means of a link E thus forminga second toggle-lever somewhat similar to the main arm 0 C. The lower arm c of the bell crank is connected by a chain F to the extension 01 of the main arm member 0 so that the raising of the latter by the operation of the winding shaft G causes the simultaneous elevation of the rear portion of the body. The position of the body indicated by dotted lines, in which the front end only is raised, is provided for by merely allowing a desired amount of slack to the chain F so that the rear mechanism is not operated immediately by the movement of the main arm.
When the body A is lowered to its normal position upon the frame the extension at lies under and extends somewhat to the rear of the axle J. I prefer to arrange the Winding shaft G to turn in the direction indicated by the arrow in raising the wagon body, and to form the extension d with an edge cl adapted to ride upon the shaft G as Iam thus enabled to positively regulate the relative swing of the members 0 and 0' around their respective pivotal centers 0 and b. By properly proportioning the lengths of the parts and their relative location and form I am thus enabled to effect the elevation of the body either vertically or with a forward or rearward movement, as may be desired. Both front and rear are positively and automatically elevated, at any desired angle, by the continued operation of the crank and any elevated position is positively and automatically maintained during the dumping operation, no supplemental operation either to vary the angle of the body or to lock it for dumping being required.
In Fig. 2 a construction slightly modified in several respects is indicated. The extension d of the main arm member 0 is not formed to ride upon the winding shaft as in Fig. 1, the relative movement of the members 0 and 0 upon their pivotal points being determined only by their proportions and location with respect to the winding shaft and other parts. The bell-crank E instead of being connected to the body A by means of a link E is provided with a roller h which rides upon the body in elevating it; and the chain F instead of being connected to the extension at as in Fig. 1 is wound upon the shaft G in the same manner as is the main chainf, the relative diameters of the shaft at the winding points for the two chains being proportioned to the relative lengths of chain to be wound upon them during the elevating operation. Instead of the chain F, Fig. 1, a slotted link may obviously be employed to connect the main arm to the rear arm E, as in my prior patent already referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not limit myself to the exact construction indicated, but
What I claim is- 1. The combination with the frame or running gear and the winding shaft mounted thereon, of the movable body and'the togglelever elevating arm 0 0 having its extended upper member operatively connected to said winding shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the frame or running gear and the winding shaft mounted thereon, of the movable body and the togglelever elevating arm G 0 having its upper member formed with an extension (1 connected to said winding shaft and arranged to ride thereon during the elevating operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with the frame or running gear and the movable body of the main elevating arm 0 O forming a toggle-lever and arranged to lift directly one end of the body, and elevating mechanism for the opposite end of the body operatively connected to a portion at of said togglelever substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination with the frame or running gear and the movable body of separate toggle-lever elevating arms for the front and rear of said body respectively, and a single power mechanism positively connected to both the front and rear arms, substantially a set forth.
5. The combination with the frame or running gear and the movable body, of the togglelever elevating arm 0 C, a power mechanism connected to one member thereof so as to permit said member to be moved without moving the other member and a guide to control the relative swing of the members in elevating, substantially as set forth.
