Be it known that I, TAYLOR WQHEINTZEL- MAN, of Sacramento,-inthe county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a certain new and; usefullmproveinent in Safety Check-Valves for Steam Boilers,'of'

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l'is a vertical central section througha safety check-valve device embodying my invention inoperative position on aboiler; Fig. 2, a transverse section at the line w of Fig.1; and Fig. 3 a similar section at the line y y of .Fig. 1, showing the arrangement of portsin the inner end of the valve casing.
In the practice of my invention I provide a spherical main valve casing 1, which is provided with a horizontally projecting cylindriv cal portion 2, which is externally threaded for connection with the outer end of a cylindrical supplemental valve casing 3, adapted to be inserted ip, and in operative position, project into, a steam boiler or other receptacle of fluidunder pressure, to which fluid is to be supplied. The valvecasing 3is connected to the shell 4 of theboiler, bytap bolts 5, pass- .ing through holes in a flange 6, formed on the outer end of'the casing 3. A ring 7, having a face turned to the form of a segment of a sphere, and fitting in a correspondingly bored recess in the boiler shell, is preferably interposed between the latter and the flange 6, to insure a tight joint having a certain degree of flexibility. The feed pipe 8, through which water is forced by means of an injector or pump to the. valve casings, is connected by means of anordinary union joint, to a tubular elbow. portion 9, formed integral with the lower side of the spherical main valve casing 1. 1
The upperendof the elbow 9, extends a short distance into'th e valve casing 1, and has its inner diameter slightlycontracted, at its upper end, in'ord'e'r, to form a seat for the main valvelO, which is of the puppet or lift type, and is forced against said seat, thus cutting ofi'the flow offfluid through the same, when the pressure in the boiler exceeds that in the feedpipe 8.
The main valve isprovided with a downwardly projecting stem 11, which slides in a vertical guide 12, which is formed integral with the innerwallof the elbow 9, and is located in suchposition as to offer the least practicable impediment to the flow of fluid throughsaid elbow.
H The main valve 10',is provided, on its top, with wings l3,which project radially from its axial line, and are turned to slide in a cylindrical guide 14, located near the top of the spherical main valve casing 1, said guide 14 beingconnected, by means of radial arms 15, to the inner side of a screw cap 16, which is fitted to screw into the top of said casing 1, in order to permit of the main valve 10 being removed without disconnecting the feed pipe 8. The radial arms 15 also serve'as a stop to prevent the valve 10 being raised too far from its seat. As will be readily seen, the guides 2 and 14, together with the guide stem 11 and wings 13, will maintain the valve 10 in proper position, and prevent any lateral displacement which might. occur if a guide stem only round the main valve 10, when it is raised to the limit of its lift. The shield or guard is of greater diameter than the valve seat, and forms the outer boundary of an annular recess or chamber surrounding it, which receives sediment or deposit which would otherwise tend to lodge on the valve seat. The shield 17 serves to prevent the formation 'of scale,
due to the use of impure water, around the main valve 10, or itsseat, thus allowing said valve to become properly seated,when the pressure in the feed pipe 8 is reduced, and preventing any leakage, as would bethecase if scale were allowed to collect upon themain valve 10 or its seat.
The su'pplemental'check valve 18, which is also of the puppet or lift "type, is fitted to reciprocate, horizontally within the-boiler,in the supplemental valve casing 3, andpre-vents the outward flow of fluid through the same, when forced by the pressure in the boiler againsta seat 19, which isshown as about in linewit'h the inner surface of the boiler shell,but which may be located in any desired position substantially within, or on the inuer-ordelivery side of, the plane in which the casing bears against the boiler shell. The valve 18 is guided in its movements'bylongitudinal ribs or projections 20, formed integralwithwings 21, projecting radially from its stem,saidribs or projections being turned to slide inthe'supplemental valve casing 3. p
The valve 18 is limited "in its movement by a stop 22, formed upon the inner face of a screw cap 23, fitted toscrewinto the inner end of the supplemental'valve casing 3, thuspermitting the insertion inposition 'of thevalve 18, and ready access'there'to for the purpose of renewal or repair. Water fed tothevalve casings by the injector or'pump,is delivered from the casing to the interior of the boiler through'a seriesof circumferential ports or openings 2 t, formed in the supplemeutalvalve casing 3, on the inner or delivery side of the valve seat 19.
In the operation of the'applianc'e, both'the valves 10 and 18, are "normally held seated, by the pressure in the boileryduring thep'eriods in which water is not bein'gfed tothe boiler. \Vhe'n the injector or'pump isstarted, the water which is'thereby forced into theelbow portions 9 below the main valve 10, unseats said valve'and fills thespherical'valve casing l and horizontal projection 2, and bears against the supplemental valve 18. The pressure of the enteringwater then uuseats the supplemental valve 18, and thewater is cure by Letters Patentdelivered to the interior of the boilerthrougli the longitudinal openings 2t, in all direc tions except directly against the tubes, thereby tending to obviate the formation of scale or incrustation at or near the valve seats. The circular shield 17, around the main valve 10, also serves as a trap to prevent incrustation around the said valve. Upon the reduction of external pressure, by the cessation of the action of the injector or feed pump, or the rupture of the feed pipe, the pressure in the boiler instantly closes the two check valves 18 and 10, the operation of both valves, in opening and closing being practically simultaneous.
If it is desired to remove themain valve 10 for the purposeof regrinding or for any other reason, it"cau be easily accomplished by removing the screw cap 16, thus exposing the interior'of the spherical valve casing 1, and
rendering all parts of said casing accessible should the feedpipe and main'valvebe entirely broken 0%, which breakage might occur between the main checkvalve 10 and the boiler, thesupplementary valve 18 would be unaffected and would perform the function of preventing the'escape of hot water and steam from the boiler, thus obviating danger ofinjury resultant thereon.
