PETER K. SAPON'OFF, O'F
PATENT Trice.
BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
SANiTARY COVER FOR WTgR-CLOSET SEAT-S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Pa/Cent No. 538,795, dated May 7,1895. Application led November 24,1894. Serial Noi. 529.821. (No model.)
Be it known that -LPETER K. SAPONOFF, a
Vsubject of the King of Bulgaria, and a resident ofBrooklyn, Kings count-y, and State of New York, have invented newand usefulImprove ments in Sanitary Covers for iVater-Oloset Seats, of which the following is aspecification.
,The objects of my invention are to provide afportable medicated cover or cushion that is the several adapted to be placed or secured upon the scat of an ordinary water closet, so as to serve as a supplemental sanitary seat or cover, which in addition to insuring cleanliness to the user and aiording protection against contamination and cold also serves to disinfect and desurroundings.
To these ends my invention consists in'the various novel and peculiar-combinations of parts of the device, all as hereiu after,.nliy-described and then pointed out in the claims.
:shaped to conform to the general I have illust-rated a type of myinvention in 'the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figurel is a perspective view showing the sanitary cover. in place upon the apertured seat of an ordinary waterscloset. Fig. 2 shows the cover in cross-section.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numbers of reference designate like parts throughout, 3 indicates the apertured seatof an ordinary water-closet upon which is placed' my improved sanitary cover or supplemental seat, which comprises a fiat and preferably stiff sheet or body-piece 4, made of paper or card-board, ozwother suitable material, and contour of the closet seat and formed with a large centrai opening 5, which is, by preference, made slightly smaller than that of the seat proper, though of the same general shape. A quantity of medicated stuthng or cushioning material 6, such for example as cotton, curledhair, wool, or the'like, is arranged upon the upper vside of the body-piece 4, and the two are enveloped or completely surrounded bya water-proof covering or jacket 7, made of oil-cloth, rubber, or like material. This stuifi'ng material before being inserted in the cover is thoroughly rmixed or impregnated with a strong antiseptic or disinfectant, such for instance as naphthalene, which will serve to disinfect the immediate surroundings, deu
stroying any microbes that it may come in contact with and at the same time acting as a deodorjzer.
Over the upper and outer surface of the water-proof jacket 7, is stretched a layer of soft material 8, that is a non-conductor of heat, so thatit will not chill the body of the person when seated thereon. For this purpose I use an ordinary fiannel, felt, canvas, or plush fabric orcloth. In making the cover, I secure the edges of the ,water-proof jacket and the cloth or flannel layer together and then stitch over such edges a binding or reinforce strip 9, which makes the article more durable, in addition to giving it a nearer finish.
By virtue of having the medicated part of the cover incased in a Water-proof jacket, the cover may bc readily scoured or Washed whenever desired without injuring the article or impariug its efficiency.
If desired the cushion may be secured to the closet seat, but it is preferable to have it detachably mounted thereon, so that it may be conveniently renaved and hung up.when not in use, for which purpose I provide the cover with a loop or eye IO.
The advantages of my improved sanitary cover are manifest, as by its use thc closet is made practically an individual one and .in hotels or like places where there are many diderent people who necessarily use the saine closet accommodations; the use of the sanitary cover practically gives to each an individual closet. Moreover, where from the 1ocation of the closet in the buiiding, or outside, or for any other reason, it is cold, the use of the cushion prevents any dangers arising to delicate constitutions from placing the body of the person in contact with a cold sur face. The antiseptic and disinfectant properties render it a complete protection, by its interposition between the body and closet seat, from any contamination that might arise from the use, of the seat by persons who were diseased or uncleanly.
It is obvious that the covers may be made of any size or shape and are as adaptable to use of children as well as adults. If preferred the antiseptic or disinfecting material may be incorporated in the body-piece also.
Having thus described my improved sani- IOO tary cover for \\'atei'closet'seats, what I claimv as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sanitary cover or cushion for a watercioset seat provided with antiseptic or disinfectant material, a water-proof jacket enveloping said material and having its upper surface covered with cloth or the like, .substantially asand for the purpose sets forth.
2. A portable sanitary covet` or cushion for a water-closet seat consisting of a fiat annularshaped body-piece 4, a layer of medicated cushioning material 6, a watei'proof jacket '7, and a cloth covering 8, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I' clainn the foregoing as vn1 y invention Ihave signed my name, inv presence of two Witnesses` ber 1894.
