SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 538,774, dated May 7, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM CONVERSE GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Letts, county of Louisa, and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Gardening-Flows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Thisinvention relates to gardening plows, and has for its object to provide a simple. cheap, readily constructed, and perfectly operating device, in which the central shovel beam may be removed or vertically adjusted, and the side shovel beams similarly adjusted, and the distance of the same laterally from the center beam or from each other be regulated.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional .elevation upon the line a: 00, Fig. 2.

In the practice of my invention, I mount upon the end of the usual or otherwise formed handle A, a tongue A, having upon the end thereof an upwardly ranging segmental extension or head A beveled upon its edge, and provided with bolt-holes a, extending laterally therethrough rearward of and in alignment with the beveled edge thereof. This tongue is inserted into the forward fork B of a joint or coupling B, the ends of said fork being pivotally secured to the tongue by means of a transverse rivet b. Extending through the fork near the central portion of the joint is a removable bolt 0 having a out o thereon and passing through one of the bolt holes a in the segmental extension A normally the lower, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the rear of the joint B is formed a similar fork B in which is inserted the center beam 0, carrying the shovel D, and having an elongated slot (1 in its forward end, through which it is secured to the fork B by means of a rivet b, which said slot preferably extends to the end of the beam in order that the same may be removed. The side beams E, which carry the shovels D, have formed upon the forward ends thereof, at the inner side, disks f, which are inserted one above the other within the center of the joint B, and pivotally secured therein by means of a bolt g, extending vertically through the joint and secured by a not Upon the forward ends of the disksfare formed teeth f, with which the extension A of the tongue A engages, the beveled'edge thereof entering between the teeth. The shovels D. D, are secured upon the ends of the several beams in any desired manner, and the same may be fastened and regulated by means of the bolts or set-screws h.

The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, being substantially as ordinarily with devices of this character; and when it is desired to elevate the beams upon the handle, the bolt 0 may be removed and re-inserted through one of the remaining bolt-holes a. The height of the center beam 0 is regulated by inserting the bolt 6 either through the main portion thereof or through the bolt-hole a in the projection G, and by removing said bolt, the center beam can be thrown forward, where but two shovels are desired, as in covering seeds or cultivating both sides'of the row at the same time. This beam may also be disconnected or wholly detached from the joint, to permit the attachment, in its place, of a pair of ordinary fenders to shield the plants. When the bolt 0 is withdrawn, the extension A can be removed from engagement with the teeth f, and the angle of the beams E, or their distance from the-center beam 0, adjusted independently or uniformly a distance of one or more teeth, whereupon the tongue is again inserted between the same. By closing these two beams against the center beam 0, the various shovels are caused to form a single one of great efficiency for f ur- (No Model.)
