invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Adjustable W'indow-Screens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement relates to that class of invention which has for its object the production of a window screen readily adjusted to windows of varied widths and which with a few sizes meet all requirements necessary to make a complete screen, and which will occupy a space equal to the lower window sash, when the screen is down and when up will occupy a space equal to the space occupied by the upper sash, and will not at any time interfere with the raising and lowering` of either of thel sashes.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I is a front elevation of a window-screen, from which the lower-facing cross-bar is broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction beneath. Fig/Ill is an outside View of the screen in position in a window-frame, the screen being shown in lower closed position, Fig. IV is a similar View Fie. Referring to the drawings l is a sheet of wire gauze or other screen-material, secured to an outer frame consisting of a bottom strip '2, a top strip 3, and side strips 4. and 5. VSecured to the bottom and top strips are two inner strips 2a 3 each formed with an internal groove 8, providing inwardly projecting anges 8a, and with inner end tongues 8b and outer end tongues 8c providing slots 10 between them, and slots 10n between them and the adjacent strip.

The thumb screws l2 have enlarged heads 14 and shoulders 15,such shoulders bearing when tightened, against a plate 16 that covers the elongated openings l1 at the side of the thumb screws 12, and thus prevent ingressof insects throughthe opening. Vhen theparts are connected, the screws 12 control the movement of the adjustable side wings, and when tightened firmly secure the side wings to the stiles of the screen in any set position, to [it a window frame.
lThe screen being placed within the window frame 17, the inner face of the adjustable side wings fit between the ordinary guide strip 18 and a strip 1.9 secured to and extending the entire length of the window'frame, the two strips forming a groove 2O in which the screen may be raised or lowered independent of and out of contact with either sash of the window. The operation of the screen is as follows:-` The screen being placed within the window frame, the adjustable side Wings are moved outward until their outer edges bear within the groove 20, against the face of the window frame, and the screws 12 are then tightened until the shoulders 15 of the screws coming in contact with the plate 16 clamp or draw the parts together, securing the side wings in a fixed position between the sides of the window frame, and the screen may be moved up and down in the grooves 20 at will, without interfering with the window sashes, or without further adjustment or attention until it maybe desired to remove it from the window.
