Be it known that I, HEINRICH THEODOR ADOLPH SOHULZE, journalist, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Berlin, (64 Mockern Street,) Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Hoisting or Lowering Perambulators on Staircases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

, This invention consists in a device which can be easily applied to perambulators of any description by hooking onto one of the wheels, or other suitable part, which device is supplied with a suitable roller or suitable rollers adapted to roll upon the railing or banister of a staircase, so that the vehicle to be hoisted or lowered upstairs or down is supported by such rollers on the banister rail and can be easily moved up and down at will.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure I shows the apparatus in position on the top rail of a banister, the rollers being drawn in section.-'

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, (6) represents a horizontal bar or shaft carrying a roller (0.) made of wood, vulcanite, soft rubber or any other suitable material. The roller (a) is preferably mounted on a metal tube inoasing the shaft (e) so as to turn freely upon said shaft. The shaft (6) is carried out somewhat at the far end of said roller (0.) and carries at its free end a second similar shaft (f) and roller (b) fastened at a suitable angle preferably at a right angle'to the shaft (a) and being free to revolve through a small angle about said shaft (6) as shown in Fig. III. The other end of the shaft (e) is stretched out into a long hook (h) bent downward and having such a shape that the rim of the perambulator wheel can be conveniently placed in the bend of said hook. In case the apparatus is to be used for different vehicles having differentlysized wheels or else if it is to be used on different staircases having banister rails of different height the part (it) can be drawn out into two or more hooks one below the other, so that one or the other is likely to serve.

I have found it convenient to give the hooks a forked shape as shown in the drawings, so that it is possible to hook said fork onto two opposite spokes near the boss of the wheel. 4

However I do .not consider it to be essential to my invention in what way the device is fastened onto the side of vehicle. Furthermore I do not consider it essential to my invention that the part (f b) should be made in the shape of a roller. Any smooth hook or downward projection will serve as well, which is adapted to keep roller (a) in its proper position on the banister rail.

The operation of the device is as follows: Such of the wheels of the perarnbulator, bath chair or like vehicle that is to be carried upstairs or down, which is nearest to the banister, is hung by its rim (or spokes) onto the hook (h), hind wheels being used by preference. The rollers (a b) are passed over the top rail of the banister and the vehicle is then raised by hand in such a way as to be solely supported by the said rollers and by the hand. In this position the vehicle can be easily rolled up or down the banister rail without touching the steps of the staircase.

What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a horizontally-arranged shaft provided with a roller adapted to run on a supporting rail or bar, of a hook depending from one end of the said shaft, and a guide piece depending from the other end of the said shaft, substantially as set forth. 9o
