DOOR CATCH.
No. 538,305. Pate nted Apr. 30, 1895.
llllllllllililil Ill ITIIL UNITED STATES PATENT cam.
JAY G. WAIT, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-CATCH.
SIECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,305, dated April 30, 1895.
Application filed March 17, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.
Beit known that I, JAY G. WAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Door- Oatch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'improvements in door catches and has for its object to provide a catch simple in construction, economical of manufacture, efficient in use and constructed in such manner that it can with great ease and facility be attached to and detached from a door.
To these ends, the said invention consists in the novel construction of door catch hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, illustrating the spring socket portion of my improved catch in position in a door-jamlo. Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrating the same in operative relation with respect to a rigid head or projection engaging said spring socket portion.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1, designates a door j amb provided in its doormeeting face with a recess A of suitable dimensions. V
The numeral 2, designates the spring socket member of my improved catch, which is stamped, crimped or otherwise shaped from a single piece of suitable metal. This member 2, is provided with a base plate 8 which is adapted to lie in the recess in the face of the door-jamlo and flush therewith. At one end of the base 3 is provided a flange or leg 4 which extends laterally or at right angles from said base, said flange or leg resting against the inner wall of the recess A, and serving as a guide in accurately adjusting the spring socket 2 in said recess, and alsoserving to aid Serial No. 504.114. no model.)
in securing the same in place. At the opposite end, the base 2 is provided with a flange 5 5, extending laterally or at right angles therefrom and provided with a screw-receiving orifice. This flange is of sufficient length to extend past the bottom wall of the recess A and a short distance along the side of the doorj amb to which it is firmly secured, as by a screw 6, as illustrated in the drawings.
The base 3 is slitted, as shown in Fig. 1, to provide an integral spring tongue '7, having a seat or socket 8.
Secured to the meeting edge of the door is a head or projection 9, which when the door is closed, is engaged by the seat or socket 8, and the door thus held closed.
By providing the lateral flange 5, on the base-plate 3, the socket member 2 can with great ease and facility be secured to and do tached from the door-jamb. This is an important advantage, especially in case the relative position of the operative parts should become disarranged when the door is closed,-
a fastening device and said base-plate also slitted to form an integralspring tongue which is formed with a seat or socket, substantially as described.
