To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN W. GARVY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Girdered Sidewalks and Similar Constructions, of which the following is a full, clear, and accurate description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to the art of construct ing side walks, floors, ceilings for vaults, &c., as hereinafter is more fully and specifically set forth.

One of the objects and advantages of my invention is to provide a simple, effective and cheap construction of this character which shall permit of the use of the ordinary gird- ,ers of commerce, either with a temporary or a permanent supporting plank or plating, While retaining the ordinary girders of commerce, and to obviate the necessity for the employment of supporting arches of brick-work or the like. r

In the drawings Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my construction in which 0, 0, represent the ordinary girder of commerce, having preferably a beveled flange or foot. When using asphaltum or other plastic material for the side walk or ceiling, I prefer to use the Ishaped girder, as shown at 0, Fig.1, but when using stone or flagging, I use the inverted T-shaped girder, 0', having a slender stem, 01, so that the flagging shall not be unduly separated, and a flange or base of sufficient strength which, as before, is preferably beveled.

B represents the supporting plank or plating of any desired shape and material, but preferably of wood, and A represents the side walk or ceiling of stone or asphaltum, or other desired material.

the asphaltumis laid, and the posts so con- 1 structed will remain as an integral support for the side walk or ceiling after the plank or plating shall have rotted away, or shall have been removed. In this construction, it is only necessary to use said plank or plating temporarily during the construction of the side walk or ceiling, but it is obvious that it would be preferable to retain the same as long as it may last.

In constructing the side walk or ceiling of stone or flagging, the short supports, a, a, a, may be inserted either from the top before the flagging is applied, or from the bottom after the same is applied. It is obvious that the recesses, a, a, a, may be of any desired number or shape. It is manifest that, in this construction, when the supporting plank or plating, of any desired material, may have rotted out or may be taken out, no injury whatever will result to the remaining structure.

I do not claim broadly the use of such supporting planks or plating in combination with girders in the construction of side walks and ceilings, for the same have been heretofore used and patented in combination with girders of peculiar constructions, but my construction and invention are applicable to, and usable with, any side-walk or ceiling, and with any of the girders of commerce; and

I claim- In a sidewalk, ceiling, and the like, the combination with the side girders having base flanges, of the planking or plating resting upon said flanges and having one or more recesses in their ends, and the filling or covering material adapted to cover the planking or plating, and passed down into the recesses, resting upon the base'flanges and providing side posts or supports for the body of the filling, sub stantially as shown and described.
