MACHINE FOR SUPPLYING SILK FIBAER TO PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,753, dated April 16, 1 895.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WINTHROP M. CRANE and WILLIAM S. WARREN, citizens of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachu setts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Supplying Silk Fiber to Paper, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention relates to an im provement in devices for applying extraneous matter to paper and the like during the process of manufacture.
The particular object of this invention is to provide an apparatus which shall supply uniformly and in given quantities to the paper while in the process of manufacture and before being compressed, silk fiber or like ma terial such as appears in the paper upon which are printed bank notes, checks, paper money and the like.
Prior to this invention means have been devised for performing the operation above referred to, but the result has not been so satisfactory as in the present instance, it being difficult to lay the fiber at the desired intervals and in uniform quantities. It has also been proposed to supply coloring matter or other substances to paper while in the machine by arranging a vat above the same with a series of spouts or tubes projecting therefrom over the surface of thepaper, the spouts or tubes being controlled by suitable cocks. It will be readily seen, however, that the quantity of material supplied to the paper ,will not be uniform or at regular intervals.
lVhile the present machine has been designed especially for the supplying of silk fiber to paper used by the United States Government in the manufacture of currency, it will be understood that it can be used for any other purpose to which it is adapted such, for example, as supplying coloring matter, (he.
The invention, therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention Figure 1 is a plan view showing the apparatus arranged above the Serial No. 510,355- (No model.)

certain of the material carriers being removed from the shaft.
In the drawings we have shown in Figs.5 and 6 so much of a paper making machine as is necessary to an understanding of the invention. This machine is of a well-known characterand need not be herein particularly described or referred to'by letters on the drawings.
A represents so much of an apron for carrying the paper as is sufficient for a proper understanding of the invention.
B represents a vat or other receptacle within which is placed the silk fiber or other material to be fed to the paper, this fiber being preferably mixed with a suitable amount of pulp to enable it to flow onto the paper. Passing longitudinally through this vat and having bearings at each end thereof is a shaft 0 having on one end a belt pulley a by means of which connection is made with a source of power. On this shaft are arranged a series of revolving receptacles or wheels D herein shown as sixteen in number which revolve in the vat and during one portion of their revo shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and is provided with a 0 suitable hub c rigidly secured to the shaft 0 by the set screw d. The receptacleD is hollowed out as shown at e for the reception of the laterally extending portion f of the trough E which has a downwardly projecting part 9 9 5 through which the shaft passes and is free to rotate. The revolving receptacle D is preferably cast in one piece and is provided with a series of independent chambers h forming in efiect buckets, said chambers being en- 10c larged at their extremities adjacent to the periphery of the wheel D and having a gradually narrowing and curved channel 2' leading from the enlarged portion toward the center of the wheel.
Suitable openings on either side of the enlarged portion of the chamber h permit the material in the vat to enter those chambers which happen to be immersed by reason of the rotation of the wheel D, and in the continued rotation thereof when the chambers are inverted, the material therein will flow down the channel 1 and be delivered into the trough E whence itis deposited upon the surface of the apron or Fourdrinier wire during the process of forming paper and is compressed with the pulp forming a part of the body of the paper.
By having the extending portion f of the trough to fit within the central portion of thereceptaele D it will be seen that the material is fed directly into the trough and furthermore the front or rear sides of said extension are curved as shown at Z and m so that as the partf fits closely within the recess in the Wheel D, said inclined parts act as cut-offs for the mouths of the channels when they are moving toward and away from their inverted position.
While the present apparatus has been found in practice very effectivein accomplishing the results aimed at it must be understood that the invention is not limited as to its main features to any of the details of construction shown and described, such for instance as the number and form of the receptacles or of the chambers within the same, nor to the form of trough.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for supplying extraneous matter to paper during its process of manufacture a material carrier rotatably mounted having a plurality of chambers for catching and raising the material and a suitable receptacle for receiving the material from the material carrier arranged with one end beneath the delivery openings of the chambers of the material carrier, said receiving end of the receptacle being curved to conform to the internal periphery of the material carrier and arranged to act as a cut-off for the material; substantially as described.
2. In the herein described apparatus a r0- tatabl y mounted material carrier, said carrier being provided with a plurality of chambers enlarged adjacent to the periphery of the carrier and having an open channel leading to the center of the carrier, said carrier being provided with transverse perforation to admit of the passage of the material into the chambers, and means for delivering the material from the open ends of the channel to the point at which it is to be deposited; substantially as described.
3. In the herein described apparatus a 1'0- tatable material carrier having a plurality of chamberswith openings forthe passage of the material into said chambers, and a suitable trough arranged in a plane parallel with the plane of rotation of the material carrier, and having a transverse projecting portion projecting into a recess formed in the material carrier whereby the discharge openings of the chambers come directly over the transverse portion of the trough; substantially as described.
4. The herein described material carrier comprising a rotatable wheel, a suitable shaft supporting the same, a trough supported on said'shaft and fitting at one end in a recess formed in said wheel, and a series of curved chambers formed in said wheel opening near one end for the reception of the material and having their inner openings at the inner periphery of the wheel and arranged when in depressed position to receive material and when in an inverted position to discharge the same into the trough; substantially as described.
5. In combination with the vat the main shaft supported at either end thereof, and a series of revolving receptacles fixed on said shaft, and a trough arranged to receive the material from each revolving receptacle and hav ing a downwardly projecting part g through which the shaft passes and is free to rotate, said trough fitting a recess in said material carrying receptacle; substantially as described.
