Be it known that 1, JOHN P. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Plumbers Blast-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a portable furnace or heating apparatus for plumbers and other somewhat similar uses; and it relates more particularly to the general construction and arrangement of the parts thereof so as to be especially adapted for the vaporizing and burning as fuel of high grade or fire test oils therein for heating purposes.
Hitherto high grade or fire test oils have not with any degree of success been vaporized and burned in such type of furnaces for constituting a fuel thereof, but on the contrary gasoline. or the like has been almost universally used in such furnaces with its attended danger of explosion unless due care was exercised in the employment thereof.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable and effective portable furnace especially adapted, owing toits construction and the arrangement of the parts thereof, for expeditiously and thoroughlyvaporizing and burning high grade or fire test oils therein for obtaining excellent calorific power therefrom; second, to provide a plumbers blast furnace in which the oil in transit is thoroughly vaporized in advance of combustion in order that increased heat im parting properties may be derived from the superior quality of the gas economically generated therein for use in the furnace in reducing matter to a molten or liquid state; third, to provide a plumbers blast furnace with a heating coil and with a needle jet valve in communication therewith and provided with a non-consumable body located adjacent thereto and adapted to constitute by the saturation of the same with oil a firing bed for hastening vaporization in the transit of the oil under pressure from the reservoir upon starting of the furnace; fourth, to provide a portable blast furnace with a reservoir having suitable pipe connections merging into a coil and with a non-consumable firing bed located adjacent to a needle valve adapted to permit of the expeditious and complete combustion of the gas generated from the oil in Serial No. 505,375. transit upon application of a flame thereto and of continuous heating for effecting thorough vaporization of the oil in its transit from the reservoir of the furnace in the use thereof, whereby a gas of high calorific power is obtained and far better heating properties derived therefrom, and, fifth, to provide a portable blast furnace with a detachable inversely tapering flame concentrator pot and with a heating and vaporizing coil having a needle operated valve adapted to control the character of the combustion of the gas from the oil in transit and increased calorific power in application of the furnace.
My invention stated in general terms consists of a portable blast furnace constructed, arranged and adapted for operation in substantially, the manner hereinafter described.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l, is a side elevational view of a plumbers blast furnace, embodying features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a top or plan View of an apertured support for the flame concentrator pot, and showing also the arrangement of the coil with a needle operating valve for controlling the exit of oil and of the gas generated from the oil for efiecting ignition in the one instance and in theother the 'combustion thereof. Fig, 3, is a perspective view of the apertured holder or support and a central broken section of the flame concentrator pot of Fig. 1, showing the manner of clamping the same to position in connection with the holder or support of the furnace. Fig. 4, is a view partly in elevation and partly in central section of the furnace of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a similar view, showing the detail construction of the needle operating valve and its location in the tapering perforated air and gas mixing chamber. The end studs 12 and b, are arranged so that the bearings c, of the ball 0, may be readily caused to engage the contracted portions of these bearings when the bail has assumed a vertical position with respect to the furnace, whereby the same in such position will support the f urnace so that it can be safely carried from place to place in an upright condition.
The support B, is provided with integral recessed clamps 2), extending from the central aperture b thereof outwardly toward the periphery so as to permit of the engagement therewith of the base of an inversely tapering flame concentrator pot D. The base (1, of this pot, has inwardly flanged recesses 01', d and d and a series of lugs d projecting also inwardly and on each side of the series of recesses of the base, in order that by a slight rotary movement of the pot D, by hand or otherwise, the same may be brought into engagement with the series of clamps b of the holder B, for supporting the pot D, to required position.
The construction of the pot D, is such that the flame rising from the combustion of the vaporized oil through the perforated air and gas mixing chamber E, which is supported by means of screw bolts or rods 6, e and c from the holder B, will take the freest line of travelin an upward direction along the inner surface of the inversely disposed tapering pot D, thereby imparting its heat to the solder or other matter to be melted in a receptacle I resting on the series of clamps b formed integral with the holder B.

This coil a, extends in a downward direction through the perforated air and gas mixing chamber E, and terminates in avalve coupling F, with internal channels f and f, and with a bonnet or casing f havingan internal chamber f which may be employed as a storage chamber for the generated gasor may be provided with a packing of asbestos or other preferred material to prevent leakage of the oil from the device F. It should be borne in mind that this material must be of such character as to permit of the free movement of the needle valve f, as requirements demand.
The'bonnet or casing f is detachably secured to the coupling F, as fully illustrated in Fig. 5, and the partially threaded needle valve stem f has a regulating nut, cap or handle f with preferably openings therein for the introduction of a rod J, in order to control the position of the needle valve in the coupling F, and regulate the flow of oil in the one instance through the interior to the non-consumable bed of asbestos or other preferred material and in the other instance of a jet flame issuing from the needle cock f into surface contact with the coil a, for vaporizing the oil in its transit therethrough from the point of connection of the coil with the T-union a and thus to increase the degree of vaporization and to enhance the combustion as well as calorific power of the gas issuing therefrom, for heating the furnace.
The bed of non-consumable material f is mounted in a casing f located adjacent to the coupling F, and is supported to required position in engagement with the bonnet or casing f of the device F. I do not wish, however, to limit myself to the precise position of the bed f as illustrated in the drawings.
It may be here remarked that the construction and arrangement of the valve and its IIO IIS
, is then opened and a rubber tubing with a or lighted taper to the supported bed of nonconsumable material mounted in the casing located adjacent to the needle valve, an intense flame can be readily derived therefrom for creating a thorough vaporization of the oil in its transit through the coil a to permit of the expeditious heating of matter to be reduced to a molten or liquid condition in the path of the flame derived therefrom. The apertures provided in the chamber E, are for enhancing combustion and also concentrating the flame in the direction of the coil a in order to insure an intense flame being derived therefrom through the uniform spreading of the same so as to envelop the exposed surfaces of the'coil and thus to thoroughly vaporize the oil in transit through the coil to the needle valve f and give a resultant gas of high calorific power for heating purposes.
The operation of the apparatus hereinbefore described, is as follows: The reservoir A, is filled with oil through the opening at, by the removal of the plug a, and when replaced the stop-cock a in the curved tube a pump or bulb, is applied to the nozzle of said tubeoF, and manipulated so as to force air into the interior to lift the oil, after the needle cock valve f, has been adjusted by means of the rod f through the pipe a T-union a coil 0, and channels f and f, of the bowlshaped coupling F, onto the bed of non-consumable absorbent material f A match may then be applied to the bed f which will at once produce a flame of considerable intensity for starting the furnace and vaporization of the oil in transit and by means of the air drafts or apertures in the air and gas mixing chamber E, the flame from the combustion of the oil gas will be directed toward the surfaces of the coil a thereby thoroughly vaporizing the oil passing through the same and when the oil saturated bed f, has been consumed by the burning off of the same, the flame will have produced a sufficient vaporization of the .oil in transit through the coil to ignite the gas issuing at the ex posed upper end of the needle cock f and which flame derived therefrom will be concentrated in the direction of the surfaces of the coil a, and the heat arising from the same will follow an upward course along the Wall of the pot D, and as well the flame will lick against the body of matter to be melted in a solder pot held on the holder B, thereby expeditiously reducing the same to a liquid or molten state, for use.
It may be here remarked that in such type of blast furnace it is essentially requisite that the flame directed from the furnaceshould quickly reduce the matter to a molten condition and the conditions are present in the form of furnace such as hereinbefore described to eflect such a result in the shortest possible time, with the greatest economy in the quantity of gaseous fuel consumed and with the waste of oil in the production of the gas for such purpose reduced to a minimum. In practice with the T-union a having a detachable grooved plug-valve a for example, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, a retarding influence is presented to the ,free flow of the oil under pressure in an upward direction through the pipe at", from the reservoir .A, to the coil a, and such a valve is readily removable from the T-union a to permit of cleaning of the same when becoming clogged by the accumulation of extraneous matter carried thereto with the oil. 7
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. A plumbers blast furnace provided with a heating and vaporizing cell, a bowl-shaped casting provided with internal channels, an oil cup connected with said casting so as to form an annular channel around the same and the edge of said cup being on a level with the top of said casting, a needle cock in said casting, and means for-actuating the same, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A plumbers blast furnace provided with a holder having tapering ears on both sides thereof and a bail having an angular part to correspond to each of said ears and said part merging into a circular opening of said bail to permit of a turning movement of the latter in connection with each of said ears of the formed in-the body thereof and one portion of said bar threaded and having a collar or shoulder and a nut, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. A plumbers blast furnace provided with a reservoir having an oil supply in connection with a heating and vaporizing coiled retort, a bowl-shaped casting having internal channels in connection with said retort, a needle-cock in said casting an oil cup arranged to form an annular channel between said casting and cup and the upper edge of said cup being on a level with the top of said casting, substantially as and for the purposes described.
