Be it known that I, BENJAMIN L. 0001;, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handsaws, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hand-saw; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same;

Fig. 3, a side elevation of the handle plates detached, and Fig. 4. a top plan viewof the same.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates especially to an improvement in handles for hand-saws and the method of attaching the blade.

Much difficulty is experienced from the use of the ordinary wooden handle on hand saws from the fact that they are readily split and broken should the saw accidentally fall. I have employed handles of hard rubber or rubber composition vulcanized onto the sawblade. This is to a degree impracticable from the fact that the heat destroys the temper in the blade. It is also impracticable to rivet a handle of rubber composition onto the blade as the rivets rapidly work loose.

Rubber or a rubber compound is far preferable to any other material for use as a handle for saws of this class not alone from the fact that they are not readily broken but also that they can be used with more comfort to the operator in cold weather the rubber being a poor conductor and in addition imparting slight friction to the hand which serves to warm it.

In the drawings, A represents the saw-blade and B the handle considered as a whole. The handle is constructed of two metallic plates, f, having a head, 9, provided with a hand-opening, k, which in the finished handle will register with the usual hand opening, m. These plates are secured together by rivets, 1), through the head. The shanks, t, of the plates, f,are left free. Onto the head,g, of

these plates I vulcanize the handle proper, o. This is constructed of rubber, rubber-compo sition embodying cork or of any other suitable material, it even being applicable to secure a wooden covering to the plate.

The saw-blade, A, is inserted between the shanks, t, of the plates,f, and secured by rivets, w, passing through rivet-openings, 0c, in said plates. Only one of these plates need be employed if preferred and the saw-blade riveted thereto, but I deem the use of two plates more desirable as they resist to a more appreciable degree the lateral movements of the saw-blade on the rivets, and serve greatly to strengthen the saw. Moreover, a single plate bent or folded to form two shanks with the opening, is, therethrough may be used.

The saw as thus constructed is exceedingly durable a single handle serving for use with interchangeable blades if desired in which event screws would be employed instead of the rivets, w. My improved handle adds greatly to the usefulness of the saw and overcomes many of the objections incident to the use of the ordinary handle as above recited.

I do not confine myself to the use of this handle with hand-saws only as by a very slight change in the shape of the handle it can be used for buck or wood saws.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. A handle for hand-saws comprising two metallic plates riveted together and having separable shanks for receiving the saw-blade and a hand opening; and a rubber handle vulcanized onto said plate around said opening.

2. A handle for hand-saws comprising the plates, f, provided with theshanks, t, heads, g, and hand-opening, is, said heads being riveted together and the rubber handle proper, v, vulcanized onto said heads.

3. In a hand-saw the blade, A, in combination with the handle, B, constructed of rubber vulcanized on two metallic plates, f, said blade being inserted between said plates and secured by riveting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
