To all whom it may concern'.-

Beit known that we, CHARLES A. POWELL and DAWSON M. HUMISTON, of Peru, iu the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cash registers and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for registering the amount of sale and keeping tally of the total amount registered by each key. With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of the cash register embodying the invention and broken away to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken through one of the keys and the adjacent mechanism. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the registering table. Fig. 4 is a detail view in rear elevation of the drawer locking mechanism.

Similarnumerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates an exterior casing in which is mounted a cash drawer or till 2 and having in the upper portion thereof a transparent panel 3 through which the tablets in connection'with the several keys and bearing the amount of sale may be made visible.` In the back portion of the casing lis mounted a sener ends of the keys S are supplied with fulcrums 10 which t into openingsin the registering bars 7 and loosely engage said bars. The lower portions of the bars 7 are provided with openings Il and below the said openings are shoulders or ratchet teeth 12. The openings ll are normally in alignment with the lower forwardly bent open ends 6 of the tubes 4 and in front ofthe said openings ll when the bars 7 are in their normal position is a guard 13. The tubes 4 are filled with a series of balls 14 which are placed therein through the mouths 5 and are fed from the lower ends of the said tubes into the openings l1, the dimension of the said opening being large enough to receive one ball only at a time.

Adjacent to the upper termination of the rear portion of the guard 13, or secured on the top of the same is the rear end of an inclined registering table l5 having a series of grooves 16 therein inte'rsected or separated by a series of bars 17, the grooves 16 being of the same dimension as the opening 1], in each bar so as to receive the balls 14. The bars 17 are separated or divided into spaces which are numbered from l upward in the first column of dollars; from 2 upward in the second column of dollars; from 3 upward in the third column of dollars; from 4 upward in the fourth column of dollars; from 5 upward in the ifth column of dollars; from l0 upward in the sixth column of dollars; and from 20 upward in the seventh column of dollars. The cents column is arranged in a a similar manner starting from the right and running toward the center. It will be understood, of course, that the keys 8 have numbers corresponding to the ribs or grooves in the registering table in accordance with the numbers represented at the bottom of each of said ribs.

A central spring actuated key 18 is mounted in the register in a vertical position and has a lower collar or shoulder 19 which is adapted to engage an elbow lever 2O extending entirely across the length of the machine and normally engaging with the uppermost of the shoulders or ratchet teeth 12 in all the bars 7 and when the said key is depressed all the bars 7 that are raised are dropped simultaneously. This key serves the purpose of unlocking the drawer and at the same time releasing any indicator which may be exposed from the previous operation of any one of the ICO keys S, but without operating the. registering mechanism. Pivoted to one of the journals of this lever 20 is a depending angular lever 21 which forms a latch for holding the drawer. This normally rests inthe position shown in Fig. 2 with its lower arm projecting downwardly and engaging a notched stock 22 at the rear of the till or drawer. The lever 2O has a pin 20 projecting laterally therefrom which engages the upper arm of said angular lever 21 so that the latter is raised by raising the rear end of said lever 20 but may have upward movement independent of saidplever. YVhen one of the keys S is actuated to raise its bar 7, the lever 20 is drawn up, carrying with it the angular lever 21 which is drawn out of engagement with the stock 22, permits the drawer or till to be opened and allows the bars 7 previously raised to drop by gravity, being held in elevation by engagement with the inner end of the lever 20, with the lower shoulder or ratchet tooth 12.

Vhen the dra-wer is opened a ratchet bar 23 mounted thereon strikes a hammer 24 in the path of movement thereof which sounds a gong 25 to give an alarm that the drawer is being opened. When any one of the keys is depressed and the bar 7 raised the ball 14 carried in the opening 11 thereof is brought in line with the proper groove 16 and rolls from the said bar 7 forwardly through the said groove 16. The said bar 7 that has been raised stays in this position until it is lowered in the manner previously setforth and it will be seen that each amount placed in the drawer or till is registered and added. When the casing is opened the sum total of the amount registered by the machine entire can be quickly ascertained. The balls 14 are successively fed into the openings 11 of the hars 7 when the latter have been relieved of the balls carried thereby in their upward movement and when they again reach a lower level. Then the drawer or till is closed the stop 22 engages the latch 21 and locks the latter against movement until released, as before set forth.

It will be understood that many minor changes in the details, proportion and form of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a cash register, the combination with the main frame having key levers therein registering dierent amounts, a series of vertically disposed tubes containing balls, one for each key lever, vertically disposed registering bars, one for each tube and key lever, the said bars provided with openings therein for the reception of one ball at a time and adapted to be raised by the depression of its key lever, the said bars having notches attheir lower ends, a till or drawer and locking mechanism therefor engaged by the notches and released by the upward movement of said bars and an inclined registering table having longitudinal independent grooves upon its upper surface, lthe said grooves representing re spectivelyamounts correspondingto then umberof the key lever, whereby upon the depression of the key lever representing a certain amount, a ball will be elevated from the lower end of the tube corresponding with said lever and deposited upon the registering table in a groove corresponding in amount with said key lever, substantially as and vfor the purposes specified. y

In a cash register, the combination with a main frame having key levers therein registering different amounts, a series of key bars attached thereto and an elbow lever engaging notches in the lower ends of said bars and adapted to simultaneously drop allot the same that are raised and release the drawer without actuating the registering mechanism and a single key independent of said key levers adapted to actuate said elbow lever, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In a cash register, the combination with a main frame having key levers therein registering diierent amounts and a series of vertically disposed registering bars connected to said levers provided with notches at the lower end thereof, a drawer or till mounted for movement in said frame and locking mechanism therefor consisting of a pivoted angle lever adapted to fit a notch at the rear end of the said till or drawer, an elbow lever engaging the notches in said bars having a laterally disposed pin engaging the upper arms of said angle lever, whereby upon the upward movement of said bar, the said angle lever will be elevated out of engagement with the notches in said drawer and the latter will be released, snbstantialiy as and -for the purposes specified.

4. In a cash register, the combination with the mainframe having key levers therein registering different amounts, a series of vertically disposed registering bars connected with said key levers and provided with notches at their lower ends, a drawer or till at the lower part of said frame and locking 'mechanism therefor consisting of a pivoted angle lever adapted to tit a notch at the rear end of said till or drawer and an elbow lever extending laterally across the frame and adapted to engage the notches in the lower ends of said bars having a laterally disposed pin which engages the said angle lever upon the upward movement of any one of said bars, whereby upon the depression of one of the key levers the registering mechanism is actuated and the drawer released and an independent key lever engaging the outer end of said elbow lever whereby upon the depression of said independent key lever the drawer mechanism will be released without actuating the registering mechanism, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
