HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,962, dated April 2, 1 895.
Application filed November 14, 1892. Serial No. 451,928. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. MOELROY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at. Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the interlocking devices, and further in the peculiar construction of the coupling head and the manner of forming the interlocking devices thereon, all as more fully hereinafter described.

My coupling belongs to that type of coupling which is known as the Sewall type, which comprises coupling heads having a cam shaped lug on one side and a forward extension upon the other side, provided with a cam shaped hook, the hook of one coupler being adapted to engage the lug of the other, a hinge being formed at the lower edge of the two heads, and the two coupling heads being held together by the action of gravity, tending,
through the cam shape of the interlocking parts, to draw the two heads together. In the previous state of theart much difliculty has been found in producing a coupler head of this type which was symmetrical in appearance and which has the requisite strength. Difficulty has also been found from the clogging up of theinterlocking parts because of their exposed position.
My invention consists in so constructing the head and the extension as to greatly lighten the weight thereof to facilitate the handling and to greatly diminish the chances of breakage and also to cover so as to 1101.

The coupling head preferably consists of a cylindrical body portion having a flat panel 12 formed at one side thereof. Upon this fiat face is a laterally extending lug 0 having the cam shaped rear face 01 with a marginal lip inclined toward the body of the coupling head.
At the front end of the coupler head is an ofiset f preferably tapering gradually from the cylindrical portion outwardly, being preferably thickest at or near the front face of the head. 9 is a forwardly projecting arm extending from this ofiset from the coupling head and having its inner face flat to correspond to the face of the panel b. This arm is undercut to form the inclined or cam shaped locking bearing it, having the overhanging lip or flange 71 corresponding to the bearing 01 and lip e on the lug c.
When the two couplers are to be coupled they are made to assume an angular position to each other. They are then moved down until the complementary bearings h and d engage, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position the flange 70 formed by under-cutting the hearing it on the inner face of the arm will thoroughly cover and protect from ice, snow or dust the interlocking bearings h d.
What I claim as my invention is A detachable hose coupling comprising two like members each consisting of a body portion having a flat panel-shaped side, a lateral lug having a cam-shaped rear face with a curved marginal rib at its rear outer edge, an offset on the opposite side of the body, a forwardly projecting arm on the offset having a flat inner face, undercut or recessed, the forward wall of the recess formed into a camshaped bearing having an overhanging lip or flange adapted to engage the lug, and the upper wall of the recess or undercut extending across the top thereof and forming a cover for the locking portions when in engagement, substantially as described.
