CAROUSEL AND PANORAMIC APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 536,853, dated April 2, 1895. Application filed May 31, 1894. Serial No. 513,023- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DARLING, re-
- merry go round, and scenic display apparatus,
and it primarily has for its object to provide a merry go round, arranged to have in addition to its usual rotary or circular motion, an irregular 'or wave motion, somewhat like that of a razzle dazzle, whereby the sensation of sailing and flying is conveyed to the rider, in addition to the flying feeling ordinarily experienced.
It has also for its object to provide a carousel having an independent wave like motion, an inclosing tent, having an observation opening, and movable scenery held to pass in front of the said opening, all arranged to co-operate, as to convey the feeling of moving as thescenery passes along, imitating or producing, as it were, the sensation of flying or sailing, the sailing sensation being augmented if desired, by suitably arranged swashing means held under the platform of the carousel, automatically or otherwise operated. i
With other minor objects in view, which hereinafter will appear, the invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement' of parts, such as will be first described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is a perspective View ofv my improvements showing. the same arranged as a combined carousel and panoramic scenic apparatus. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the carousel tent. Fig. 3 is a central vertical cross section of the carousel, showing the preferred construction. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the proper relation of the main drive shaft, the master drive wheel and the shaft for operating the oscillating mechanism.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicatesacentralsocketorspider plate,fitted on the meeting joint of the cross or base timbers A A, which are securely braced to each other and bolted to the spider plate a in any approved manner, preferably as shown.
B indicates a perpendicular post or standard fitted with its lower end in the socket a and held from turning, which post forms the support for the platform, and has for such purpose a socket b at the upper end, in which seats a ball 6', on which is fitted for a uni versal oscillatory motion a cap or supporting plate C, of a desired ornamental shape, the outer or peripheral edge of which has a series of lugs c andintermediate slots 0' for a purpose presently described.
Dindicates an annular flanged plate of a much larger diameter than the post B, which is fitted over such post and has a lower flange d and an upper parallel flange 61', such plate forming as it were, a hub for the inner end of the radially projecting platform supporting beams E E, suitably braced to each other in a manner most clearly shown in Fig. 4, and which are secured to the hub plate bythependent rods F which have headed endsf fitted in the slots 0 before referred to, the lower ends of which pass through the flanges d and d and the inner ends of the beams E and are secured by the jam nuts f, such beamsE being further supported and braced by the diagonally pendent rods G, having eyes g at their upper ends which fit'on the hooks c of plate 0, while their lower ends pass through the cross pieces or supporting members H held against the lower edge of the beams E as shown.
As a simple and efiective means for holding the rods F and Gsecurely connected with plate 0, I provide a ring Iwhich is placed on such plate 0 against the rear faces of the eyes 9, before the rods F are applied, the heads f of such rods bearing down onto such ring when drawn down by the nuts f, which not only secures the ring in place, but also, prevents such rods F pulling out of the sockets 0'.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 3 and 7 it will be noticed, the socket plate a has a circular bearing disk a provided with a transverse central groove or channel or gin which is fitted flange portions j j formed on the under face of a slide member or hub J, held to play freely about the post B, which member has at its lower end an annular flange j on which is held the hub portion of the master drive wheel K, between which and the hub portion proper J of the member J, is held a double set of ball bearings j" 3' held spaced apart by the ring plate lc'as shown, which balls, as well as the upper face portion 70 are held in place by the projecting flaugej of the annular plate J which plate has a pair of beveled ribsj on its upper face, which seat in corresponding grooves Z in acap plate L fixedly held on the post B as most clearly shown in Fig. 3, the ribs being beveled so as to become self adjusting, as they become worn.
The master wheel K has aseries of eye portions K formed on its hub portion, to which are connected stay rods M the outer ends m of which pass through lugs N secured to the ends of the beams E, and are secured by jam nuts on.
Referring again to Fig. 3 it will be noticed the slide J has at one end an extension j which has a pendent pin j to which is pivoted one end of a pitman O, the other end of which is connected with a wrist pin p, on a drive wheel I, mounted on a shaft 19, held in a socket Q, secured to one of the timbers A, the shaft being kept in its seat by set screws 29 working in a groove in the shaft, such arrangement allowing the said wheel P being placed at a low plane when all is placed on a floor, and out of the way of the swaying platform.
R indicates a main drive shaft which can be operated in any desired manner, on which is mounted a pair of drive wheels held-for independent movement, and which in practice is so connected therewith to be shifted thereon to become loosely or fixedly connected therewith. One ofthese wheels S is connected by the chain belt S with the main drive wheel K, while the other T is connected by thechain T with the drive wheel P.
The motor or drive shaft R is placed at or near right angles with the slide J and on the same plane, or as much lower as the chain belt will practically allow, the object of placing at right angles being to allow for the swing movement of the platform without materially affecting the tension of the said chain belt.
So far as described it will be observed that by adjusting the wheel S to turn with the drive shaft and the wheel '1 to remain loosely thereon, and the slide J held centrally on the post B, that when motion is applied to the drive shaft, the regular rotary motion will be imparted to the platform, and owing to the peculiar and simple manner in which such platform is supported, the same can easily, and with a minimum amount of power be rotated.
\Vhen it is desired to transmit what is known as the razzle dazzle or rotary wave motion, to the platform, the wheel T is also made fast with the shaft R, to impart motion to the wheel P, which in turn will impart a reciprocating horizontal motion to'the slide J and wheel K, and thereby rock the platform on its central or supporting post B; the mechanism in the practical construction being so arranged as to impart a number of reciprocating or swing movements thereto, at each revolution of the platform, whereby a continuous wave motion will be obtained.
Tent poles U are detachabl y secured in the outer ends of the beams E, which have guy ropes a, and to such poles and a center pole secured to the center plate C is secured a tent or covering V, provided at one side with an opening V as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the carousel is used in connection with the panorama or scenic display devices, and when so used, the drive wheel S is held from rotation on the drive shaft, and the carousel held fro m a circular or rotary motion, by a flexible chain or rope secured thereto and a fixedpoint, whileit is being swung by the reciprocal movement of the slide.
When used as a panorama seats are placed on the carousel platform, as shown in Fig. 2 and (when it is desired to imitate a sailing motion) water holding chambers A are held under the platform, the splashing noise of which will convey the feeling of sailing on the water, and such splashing action may be augmented by providing openings or other devices in the boxes adapted to throw a water spray in front of the platform.
B indicates the scenic or panoramic display devices, which comprise end posts I), endlessscene belts or canvas bodies I) b (in practice two being preferably used) on one of which is delineated a land, while on the other a water scene, such bodies I)" 21 being held by any suitably arranged mechanism for vertical adjustment, and to travel in front of the opening in the carousel tent wall as shown. By thus arranging a moving panorama scene, and a carousel held to be oscillated transversely to the movement of the scene the sensation of sailing will be conveyed to the occupants of the carousel.
In Figs. 4 and 6 I have shown a modified construction of mechanism for operating the carousel, and in such construction the post B, has a conical bearing 20 at its lower end, on which is fitted the bearing hub K of the master wheel K which has a conical bearing it and has fixedly secured on its upper face a cam K having conical bearing 70 in which seats a conical bearing ring is secured to the post B, such cam having also a projecting horizontal flange 70 as shown.
L indicates an auxiliary and compensating IIO cam, which is fitted on the cam K ball bearlar disk M held to bear on ball bearings m held between it and the perimeter of the cam L such disk m having eye portions Z to which are connected the stay rods M.
Upon the upper face the cam L has a se ries of lock lugs Z with which is adapted to engage a pivotal dog or look member 1*, connected with the cam K to which is connected a link arm 1 having a sleeve fitting on the post B, and having secured to its upper end a hand operated shifting lever as shown.
By adjusting the lock member to the position shown in Fig. 4 causes the outer and inner cam members to become locked together, the lugs being so arranged that one set, when engaged by the lock member will bring the cam members in a concentric position with the post B, and as the parts are thus locked and the annular member M locked by the hooks to the master wheel K it follows, that the circular or carousel motion will be imparted thereto, which motion in the present construction is transmitted from a single operating belt, which passes over the master wheel K as shown. When however it is desired to impart a swaying motion only, the platform will be held from turning by a stay rope secured thereto, and the cams before referred to held locked together eccentrically and the rim M unlocked from the master wheel.
It is manifest that when desired the side walls of the carousel tent may be removed, and the top held on the end uprights, and to travel around with the carousel body. The sight of a tent or cover traveling around will form an attractive feature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved carousel and panoramic apparatus comprising a vibratory movable carousel or holding chamber, having a sight opening a moving scene held to travel in front of such sight opening, and water holders secured to the carousel platform and agitated by the vibrations thereof, all substantially as specified and for the purposes described.
2. In an apparatus as described, the combination with a central post a carousel or holding chamber, centrally pivotally supported on such post means for imparting a vibratory or wave like motion thereto, said chamber having a sight opening, of an endless scenic belt or canvas body held to travel in front of the said opening, and water splashing devices held under the holding chamber operated by the vibrations of the said chamber all arranged substantially as shown and described.

4. In an apparatus as described, a carousel, centrally supported and held for independent circular and lateral motions, a single operating mechanism for imparting such motions, such mechanism including connecting devices, adapted to be moved into adjusted positions whereby to impart either a circular or lateral motion, or a combined circular and lateral motion, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
5. In an apparatus as described a carousel comprising a central supporting post, a platform supported centrally on the post for a circular swing motion, a transversely movable slide member having operating mechanism connected therewith and a main drive Wheel secured to such platform, a drive shaft, havingindependent drive wheels adapted to be moved to be held loosely on or rotate with the shaft, one of such wheels being belted with the drive wheel and the other with the slide operating mechanism all arranged substantially as shown and described.
6. In an apparatus as described a carousel having a central support or post, a platform suspended therefrom for circular and wave like motions, a main drive wheel held loosely on the said post, a laterally movable member held connected to such wheel, and forming a hub therefor and drive mechanism for driving the said wheel and for moving the hub member laterally as set forth.
7. The combination with the post B and the platform pivotally held supported from the upper end thereof, of the hub or member J held to slide transversely to the axis of the post a master drive wheel journaled on such hub, the stay rods M connected thereto and to the platform, and means for rotating the drive wheel as the slide member is moved transversely as and for the purposes described.
8. The combination with the socket a having transverse guide flanges, the post B, the platform pivotally hung on the upper end thereof, and the cap plate L secured to the post,of the slide hub J having a flange fitting between guide flanges on plate a, a main drive wheel held on such hub J, the'stay rods connecting the wheel and the platform, a main drive shaft having a pair of independently adjustable drive wheels S, T one of which S is belted with the drive wheel, a supplemental wheel having a wrist pin belted with the wheel T and a pitman connection between such pin and the slide hub all arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
9. The combination with the socket u having a transverse guide, the slide member J having a hub portion and guide lugs fitting the transverse guide, a master drive wheel mounted on such hub, of the post B the oscil- ICO secured thereto, a hubmember for such wheel movable laterally on the central post, and a drive mechanism connected to the master 15 wheel and to the said hub, arranged to impart a reciprocating motion to the hub as it rotates the master wheel all substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
