CORN-CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION'formng part of Letters Patent No. 536,541, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed November 19, 1894. Serial No. 529,315. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX ROBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Prairie du Rochenin the county of Randolph and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OornCulti vators; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a corn cultivator of simple construction, which shall be very effective in its operation, being designed to operate upon lboth sides of a row or drill at the same time, and provided with means whereby it can be adjusted to rows of different widths or of irregular character at the pleasure of the operator.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction -and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letterAindicates the central beam of my improved cultivator, which is shown as having its rear portion bent or curved to form a standard for a shoe B.
C, C designate two lateral beams which are secured to the central beam at their forward portions, and near the forward end of said central beam, upon opposite sides thereof, and diverging therefrom. The beam Cis curved at its rear portion in the same manner as the central beam, and carries a shoe B. The beam O is formed in two sections, the forward section being rigid with the beam A, and the rear section having a hinged or pivotal connection with said forward section. This movable section is forked or bifurcated, as indicated at C2, and each branch carries a shoe B2.

E designates a guide shoe, of bent or bowed form, its forward end portion being loosely secured in the end portion of the beam A, and its rear, vertical arm adj ustably held in a slot of said beam just forward of the brace D. That portion of the forward end of the shoe which projects above the beam forms a draft hook F.
F', F', designate the two handles which are pivotally secured, one to a lateral face of the beam A, and the other to the inner face of the inner branch of the fork C2. Forming an adjustable support for each handle is a brace G.
In operation, the cultivator is made to straddle the row or drill, the two shares B, B working` to one side thereof, and the shoes B2 to the opposite side. The guide shoe E is made to -run upon the near side of the row. The two handles F', F, being independent of f each other, it will be observed that the operator may, by the manipulation of the handle attached to the forked section, spread such section with rela-tion to the fixed section, so as to cultivate near to or farther from Athe row, as may be desired. The same construction also permits the operator to avoid stones or obstructions, and to soguide the forked section as to prevent injury to any plants which may be out of the line of the row.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letl ters Patent, is-
The corn cultivator having the main beam A, the lateral diverging beams C, C', rigidly secured to said main beam near its forward end, said beam C havinga hinged or pivoted section, having a fork O2, independent handles pivotallyV attached one to the beam A and the other to the hinged section of beam C', braces having adjustable connections with said handles, and braces, one connecting the two forks of the hinged section, and one the beams A and C, substantially as specified.
