To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DUDLEY LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savona,in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Electric Brakesg and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to brakes for railway cars of the class that are operated by electrical appliances.
The object of the improvement is to simplify the brake actuating'devices and render them more certain and positive in their action and adjustable in their parts.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
Figure l is a bottom plan view of a car showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention, the mountings-being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the adjustable mountings for the power transmitting lever. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the post to whichthe power transmitting lever is attached.
For the sake of simplicity in the illustration of the invention it is shown applied to one set of wheels. However, it will beunderstood that it is contemplated applying it to all or any desired set of wheels in the usual and well known manner.

These ways 0 extend transversely of 'the carand have their opposing sides provided with flanges 6 to enter the space between the end of the post and the head of the screw E to be clamped thereby so as to hold the post in the required position. By adjusting the relative position of the post, the other parts remaining relatively fixed, the throw of the lever can be regulated to compensate for Wear and for other desired purposes.
Two electro magnets H and I are provided as a means for applying the brakes in connection with an electro-motive force derived from a suitable source. In cars propelled by electricity a suitable switch will be provided to cut the motor out of circuit and bring the said electro magnets in circuit. A storage battery, or other source of supplying the current necessary to operate the brakes may be employed. The magnet I is relatively fixed and the magnet H is movable, being attached to' the rod 3 and movable therewith. The magnet I has a threaded stem 7 by means of which it is adjustably held to a bracket B pendent from the car. Adjusting nuts 8 and 9 are mounted upon the stem 7 and clamp the pendent part of the bracket B between them. The magnet is fixed in the located position whenonce adjusted. The rod 3 Works loosely in a hanger A and is guided in its movements thereby.
, The trainwire 10 has terminals K and O, the former being fixed, the latter movable so as to be coupled with the fixed terminal of the train Wire on the contiguous car. The fixed terminal J is electrically connected by wire 11 with the magnet H and the movable terminal N is electrically connected by wire 13 with the magnet H, the two magnets being in circuit through the wire 12. .A conductor 14 is located at one end of the car to connect the terminals J and K to close the circuit at the rear end of the last car. A similar conductor is provided at the opposite end of the car and has terminals L and M to which the movable terminals 0 and N connect to close the circuit at this end of the car should it be the rear end of the train. In making up a train the movable terminals 0 and N will connect with fixed terminals J and K on the contiguous end of the next car and so on throughout the train. The terminals of the rear end of the last car will be connected in the manner set forth. On establishing the circuit the magnets H and I will mutually attract each other and cause a movement of the magnet H and its attached rod and cause an application of the brakes in the manner set forth. On interrupting the circuit the magnets will be deprived of their vitality and the brakes will be returned to a normal position by means of the usual return spring Q.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an electric brake, a fixed electro-magnet, a movable electro-magnet in the same circuit therewith, a brake-beam, a lever connected to said brake-beam and said movable magnet, and means for regulating the throw of said lever, substantially as set forth.
2. In an electric brake, a fixed electro-n1agnet, a movable electro-magnet in circuit therewith, a rod or arm projecting from said movable magnet, a brake-beam, a lever connected to said brake-beam and said rod or arm, and means for regulating the throw of said lever, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a brake, and an electrically operated rod, of a power transmitting lever having connection at its ends, respectively, with the brake and the said rod, a post supporting the lever, transverse ways for the post to move in, and means for securing the post in the located position, substantially as specified.
4:. In an electric-brake, a fixed electro-magnet, a movable electro-magnet in the same circuit therewith havinga rod or arm projecting therefrom, a hanger supporting said rod or arm, brackets or ways, a pivot rod adjustably secured to said brackets or ways, a brake-lever mounted on said pivot-rod and connected at one end to said rod or arm, and a spring also conncctedto said brake-lever, substantially as set forth.
