SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,534, dated March 26, 1 895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ALFRED LAMP BERT, ofOrrington, county of Penobscot, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce in hammers improvements by which the claw is made adjustable, and by which in horse shoers hammers the claw'is specially adapted for wringing off the driven nails in the well being shown in full lines turned toward the,
handle, and in dotted lines turned in the opposite direction. Fig. III is a section on the line X-X of Fig. II, looking downwardly.
Referring to the figures on the drawings: 1 indicates the hammer head and 2 thehelve thereof. 3 indicates a stud bolt projecting from the upper end of the hammer head, preferably screw threaded on its extremity, as indicated at 4 and adapted to receive a sink nut 5.
6 indicates a claw of suitable construction, having a body part 7 that is pierced by a central bore 8 that fits closely around the stud bolt 3and is revoluble thereon, its separation from the stud bolt being prevented by the nut 5.
It being the object of my invention to render the claw revolubly spring-actuated, it may be provided, as shown in Fig. I, with a prong 16, to which is fastened at one end a tensile spring 17 secured at the other end to the,
helve, as by a hook 18. The spring may be,
if preferred, concealed within the helve, as
shown in that figure in dotted lines. For
preventing the escape of the spring from the prong 16 a yielding protector 19of rubber,
having a concavity 20 on one side and of a' bodiment of my invention is illustrated, in
which the body part 7 of the claw 6 is provided with a cam 21. The cam is located so that its highest point or apex 22 comes opposite the claw and its lowest point 23 comes underneath the same. A spring, preferably U-shaped, secured at one end between the hammer head and the helve, as indicated at 25, and projecting at the other end above the cam 21, serves by pressure exerted from above against the surface of the cam to keep the claw normally in the rearward position. For this reason, it preferably carries on its engaging end an anti-friction roller 26 against which the cam works. In practically utilizing the revolubility of the claw upon the hammer head, the bifurcation of the claw is straddled upon a nail, as for example, a horse shoe nail, and the operator, moving the bandle in a circle and thereby giving the hammer and claw a crank and connecting rod movement, twists and severe the nail. When the nail is twisted off the claw returns automatically to its natural position, by means of the spring which actuates it.
What I claim is--'- v l. The combination with a hammer head, of a revoluble claw secured thereto, and spring actuating mechanism in operative relation with the claw and adapted to compel it to assu me a determinate normal position, substan tiallyas specified.
2. The combination with a hammer head, stud bolt and nut, of a claw having a bore to fit the stud bolt, and spring actuating mechanism adapted to yieldingly resist the removal of the claw from its normal position and to return the claw to said normal position when the same is released,'substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a hammer head and revoluble claw, of a cam upon the claw,
