L. SL'I'LATAU. WHIPPLETREE VH OOK- Patented Mar. 26-, 1895.
I UNITED STAT S PATENT OF ICE.
LOUIS S. FLATAU, OF PITTSBURG, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM M. ROBINSON, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
WHIFVFLETREE-II-IOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,463, dated March 26,1895.
Application filed October 23, 1894.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS S. FLATAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Camp and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in whiftletree hooks, and its object is to provide a novel device of this character in which it is impossible for the trace ring or link to become accidentally detached, but which may be readily removed or disengaged from the hook when desired.
The invention consists essentially in form:
ing the end of the Whiffletree with a flattened circular plate or disk, connected with the body of the whifiietree by means of a neck or shank and formed with an elongated slot, inclined at an angle to the horizontal axis of the whiftletree, in combination with a hook, the inner end of which is bifurcated forming two arms embracing said disk and connected together by means of a pin or rivet which engages with said slot, as hereinafter fully described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings: Figurelis an elevation of a portion of a whifiletree and hook constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the hook being removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hook detached. Fig. at is an elevation showing the hook applied to a wooden whiffle-- tree.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates an all metal whiffletree, formed at its end with a circular plate or disk 2 connected with the whifiletree by a neck or shank 3. Formedin this disk is an elongated slot 4, inclined at an angle to the horizontal axis of the whiftletree, the inner end of which occupies a central position with respect to the disk. i
The numeral 5 designates the hook, the in- Serial No. 526,712. (No model.)
ner end of which is bifurcated forming two arms 6, through which and said slot passes a pivot pin or rivet 7. Instead, however, of forming this hook with two arms a single arm only may be used, but the former is the preferred manner of constructing the same.
In Fig. 4:, I have shown the device applied to the Wooden whiffletree, the disk 2 and neck 3, being connected with a socket 8, which fits on the end of the whiffletree.
'The operation is as follows: To engage a trace hook or link with the hook, the latter is turned backward until the arms of the hook are at approximately a right angle to the inclined slot in the disk, as shown by the dotted lines Fig. 2, enabling the pivot pin or rivet to be pushed from the inner to the outer end of the slot, and the point of the hook to be forced away from the periphery of the disk, so as to form a passage way for the insertion of the link or hook. The hook is then turned forward until the point thereof strikes or comes in contact with the periphery or rim of the disk, which it will do owing to the inner end of the slot, which forms a bearing for the pivot pin or rivet being eccentric to the disk. As the movement of the hook is continued, therim or periphery of the disk acts as a cam, gradually forcing the said pivot inwardly until it reaches the upper end of the slot. Said pivot will now be centered, or concentric with the rim or periphery of the disk, so that no matter how much the hook is turned, the point thereof will always con tact with the periphery or rim and thus prevent the trace link or ring from being disen gaged.
rom the above it will be seen that I provide a simple and economical hook, in which the trace ring or hook cannot be disengaged or detached, until the hook is turned back 2. The combination with the disk formed my own I have hereunto affixed my signature with an elongated radial slot, of the hook in presence of two witnesses.
havin its inner end bifurcated forming arms which embrace said disk, and the pivot pin LOUIS FLATAU 5 or rivet connecting said arms and engaging XVitnesses:
with said slot, substantially as described. A. R. CANFIELD,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as M. J. KAVANAGH.
