DENTAL FILLING-TOO L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,327, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed February 11,1895- erialNo 537,978. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. CRYMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piedmont, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentists Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the i show how the filling material is picked up, and
Fig. 4 how it is ejected from the carrier; while Fig. 5 shows the construction of the spring by which the carrier tube or filling holder is normally held in position to receive and carry the filling material.
The handle A,shank B,and plugging point 0 constitute a plugger of ordinary construction.
Projecting from the shank of the implement, laterally thereto and in a direction the opposite to that in which the plugger point projects, is a pin or rod D performing the function of a plunger as in turn to be explained. This plunger D is enlarged at its outer end, being formed with the annular shoulder d. A tube E for holding the filling materialsurrounds the plungerand is adapted to have a limited sliding movement thereon.
At its inner end the filling holder E has its.
internal diameter reduced, being annularly shouldered at e. Contact of this shoulder e, with the shoulder d of the plunger limits outward movement of the holder. The holder is provided at its outer end with an external shoulder f, against which bears the curved outer end 9 of a spring G which is secured at V its inner end to the shank of the implement parallel with which it extends to the point h where it bends or projects sidewise so that it may be extended clear of the shank to its curved outer end g which bears upon the filling holder.
In operation, the filling material is picked up by the holder by pressing it down upon a suitably prepared quantity thereof, (see Fig.
'3) a finger being kept pressed upon the spring at the time. The material in the holder is then carried to a properly prepared tooth cavity to be filled and the holder pressed upon the tooth opposite to the cavity in which it is presented so that upon the inward movement of the holder, as the spring yields, the material is forced into the cavity by the plunger. During the insertion of the filling material into the cavity it will of course be nnderstoodthat the springmust be relieved from pressure of the finger so as to be free to yield. The filling material is then suitably packed in the cavity by the plugger point, the one imple-.
ment serving, it will be seen, to carry and apply the filling and pack it in the cavity.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the implement shank, of the-fixed plunger projecting therefrom, the filling holder movable on the plunger, and the spring secured to the shank, extending for a portion of its length parallel therewith, and bearing upon the holder, substantially as set forth.
2. The dentists implement provided with the plugging point, the fixed plunger projecting laterally to the implement shank and in a direction opposite that in which the plugging point projects, the fillingholder movable on the plunger, and the spring acting upon the holderto normally maintain it in position to pick up and carry the filling material, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS G. CRYMES.
