GRAIN-WEIGHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,281, dated March 26, 1895.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lewis 0. GUTTERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of WVarren and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Grain-WVeighers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain weighers, and it has for its object the provision of an automatic grain weigher, in which the receiving and dumping of grain can be accomplished with ease, accuracy and expedition, and which willautomatically register the amount of grain passing through the device.
The invention consists essentially of a drum or other suitable measuring device, divided into two compartments by a suitable partition forked or spread at its lower end, and having hinged or pivoted at its upper end a suitable link having a slot in its free end, and a shield or casing fitting over the said drum, the whole adapted to operate to automatically measure grain.
The invention further consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts andtheir co-operation with one another, as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawing and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing the figure represents a side elevation of the device, and its connections, the said device being partly broken away to show the construction and operation of the several parts, and the manner in which they are connected to an elevator.
Referring to the drawing by letters, A represents an elevator of the usual construction, and is for the purpose of delivering grain to the device, which latter consists of a drum or other receptacle D and an outer shield or casing B. This receptacle D may be of any suitable shape and is divided into two compartments bya partition 01 rigidly secured therein. The top and bottom portions of the receptacle D have suitable openings for the reception of the grain and its passage therefrom. The partition d extends slightly above and out of the opening in the receptacle D, and has hinged thereto links having suitable slots or openings in their free ends, which said slots m are adapted to fit upon pins or projections it upon the elevator chute, as shown. These links M are for the purpose of holding the drum D locked while the grain is entering a compartment and until a predetermined quantity has flowed therein by the upward pressure of thelink M against the pin it upon the elevator chute. The lower end of said partition (Z is forked or spread, as shown at e, e, and extends a suitable distance out of and beyond the lower opening in the receptacle D, as shown in the drawing. B is a stationary shield or casing surrounding said drum or receptacle D, and has a suitable opening in the top thereof for the passage of grain into the compartments in the said receptacle D, and an opening in the lower portion thereof for the passage of the grain from the said compartments into the hopper F, or any other suitable receptacle.
H, H, are rods or supports rigidly secured to the shield or casing B and have their upper ends secured to a horizontal scale beam I, fulcrumed at Jand provided with a suitable adjustable weight K.
h is a pin or ticker on the rod H, and engages with asuitable registerL as shown, for the purpose of registering the amount of grain that passes through the device.
G, G, are suitable stay rods hinged or pivoted at one end to the elevator as shown at N, and at its other end to the rods or supports H, H, or any other suitable point upon the casing B, and serves to prevent the device swinging, but will permit a vertical movement of the device, as is evident.
The drum or receptacle D is mounted in the shield or casing B upon a suitable shaft E, for the purpose of allowing it to oscillate during its operation.
13 is a suitable hopper or receptacle into which the grain is poured after it has been measured.
The operation of the device is as follows: The device being in the position shown in full lines in the figure the grain is passed up through the elevator, and falls through the opening in the casing B into one of the compartments in the receptacle or drum D. As long as the receptacle or compartment in the a drum D contains a less weight of grain than I has been taken as the unit of measure, the weight K through the leverI and supporting rods 11, II, hold the device and its contents up so that the lower end of the slotm in the link to M rests firmly against the pin or projection 12 on the elevator chute, which forces the upper end of the partition d against the left side of the opening in the casing B, as shown, and the lower or forked end will in consequence I be forced firmly against the right hand side of the opening in the bottom of the casing, thereby forming a reliable lock for the bottom of the right-hand compartment in the drum. When the full measure of grain has 2 run into the compartment the Weight K will be over-ba1anced, the casing and receptacle will be depressed, and as the pressure in the lower end of the slot in the link is removed, the weight of the grain in the right hand compartment will cause the drum to oscillate and assume the position shown in dotted lines. The grain will then tiow from the right hand compartment into the hopper F, and the left hand compartment will then be in readiness for the reception and measuring of grain, and
the opening in the bottom of the compartment on the left hand side will be locked in the same manner as was the one on the right hand side.
In this device it will be noted that the outer casing B and the forked ends 6, e of the partition d, form the lock of the device, and that this lock is automatically manipulated through the slotted links M, and the oscillation of the said drum or receptacle D in the casing B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In an automatic grain \veigher the combination of a casing suitably mounted and provided with inlet and outlet openings, with an oscillating drum mounted therein, a partition in said drum, the lower end of said partition extending through and below the opening in the casing B, and having its lower end forked or spread, and a link M pivoted on the upper end of said partition having a slot in one end thereof engaging a suitable lug or pin, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an automatic grain Weigher the combination of-an outer stationary casing suitably suspended from a scale beam, with a drum suitably mounted and adapted to oscillate therein, a partition in said drum, and a link pivoted to the upper end of said partition and having aslot in one end thereof, the said link being adapted to hold the drum in a locked position until a predetermined quantity of grain has flowed into a compartment, as set forth.
3. In an automatic grain weigher the combination of an outer stationary easing, with a drum suitably mounted and adapted to oscillate therein, the said drum being provided with compartments, a partition therein having its lower end forked or spread, and a suit able link having a slot in one end hinged to the upper end of said partition, and adapted to lock said oscillating drum and hold it in position to receive the grain, as set forth.
4:. In an automatic grain weigher the combination ofa casing B, a drum or receptacle mounted in said casing and adapted to oscillate therein, a partition in said drum having secured upon its upper end a slotted link or links, and its lower end forked and projecting through the lower opening in the casing B and adapted to engage with the edges of the lower opening of the casing to form a lock, as set forth.
5. In an automatic grain weigher the combination of an oscillating drum having compartments therein, with a slotted link or links M hinged to said oscillating drum and ad aptcd,
