NIT'ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DETACHABLE FOOT-REST AND TABLE FOR BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,945, dated March 19, 1 895.
Application filed January 1'7I 1895. Serial No. 535.200. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA DONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairiield, in the county of Fairfieldand State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Detachable Foot-Rest and Tables for Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such' as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its obj ect to provide a detachable combined foot rest and table which shall be adapted for attachment by any person, without the employment of a skilled mechanic, to beds already in use thus enabling y the user at very slight expense to make an ordinary household bed serve as a comfortable and convenient invalids bed.
With this end in view I have devised the novel attachment of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, numbers being used to designate the several parts.
Figure I is a perspective illustrating my novel attachment applied to a bed and in position for use as a table, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing in full lines the attachrn ent in position for use as a foot-rest and in dotted lines the position of the attachment when not in use.
l denotes the side rails of an ordinary bedstead, it being of course wholly immaterial what may be the shape or style of the bedstead.
The attachment consists of a board 2 which may or may not be upholstered on one or both sides as preferred. To this board are rigidly attached arms 3 which extend at right angles to the plane of the board and are provided with slots 4t. 5 denotes arms which are pivoted in any suitable manner to the side rails of the bed and are provided with slots 6. I have shown the arms as pivoted directly to the side rails of the bed by screws or bolts 7. They may be held in place however, in any suitable manner as for example by suitable clamps which would preferably be used where the attachment was to be secured to an iron bedstead. I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate a clamp for the reason that .any suit- 5o,
side and as provided with thumb rests 9 which engage the threaded outer ends of the bolts.
When the attachment is to be used as atable the arms are placed in the position shown in Fig. l, the free ends of arms 3 resting on the floor. The arms are then locked together by the set screwsleaving the board extending across the bed in convenient position for use as a table.
The use of my novel attachment as a footrest is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. It is of course well understood that when invalide are sitting up in bed there is constantly a tendenoy to slip down on the pillows. In order to overcome this difficulty the invalid is sometimes slid down in the bed so that the feet rest against the foot-board and chairs and other articles are placed behind the pillows. This however, is both uncomfortable and incon Venient and necessitates moving the invalid down toward the foot of the bed. When my novel attachment is used the invalid rests against pillows placed against the head-board of the bed and the attachment is adjusted asl indicated in Fig. 2 to support the feet,it being understood of course that arms 3 may be attached to the side rails of the bed in any convenient position for use.
When the attachment is not in use it may be placed wholly out of the way on the outer side of the foot-board as indicated in Fig. 2 and the arms locked together by the thumb screws as before thus retaining it inposition.
If it is desired to wholly conceal board 2 a curtain, not shown, may be attached to the footboard Having thus described my invention, I claim- A detachable foot-rest and table for beds consisting of a board having slotted arms attached thereto and lying at right angles to the on the ioor when used as a table, other slotted arms adapted to be pivoted to the side rails of a bedstead and suitable means for locking the arms together to retain the board in position for use as a table, or a foot-rest for an invalid and also for securing the board in position on the outer side of the foot-board of a bedstead when the attachment is not in use.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
