AWNING-OPERATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,8 73, dated March 19, 1895. Application filed May 17, 1894:. Serial No. 511,569- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Awning-Operating Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to awning operating devices; and it has for its object to provide improvements in devices for operating awnings of the type which preferably employ endless chains for rolling up and unrolling the awning.
To this end it is the mainobject of this invention to provide an improved device for regulating the tension of the chain to compensate for contraction and expansion by cold and heat and also by continual usage of the same and also to provide means whereby the main operating devices can be entirely removed from their support when desired.
With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a side elevation of an awning winder connected with an awning roller, and constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the winder. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross-section of the device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a supporting plate secured to any suitable point of attachment and provided on each side thereof with the opposite inturned flanges B, forming the opposite guide grooves C. Adapted to be adj ustably mounted upon said supporting plate A, is the winder box D, having the opposite projecting slide flanges E, engaging the guide grooves upon opposite sides of the supporting plate, and thus provides means for loosely mounting the said box D, upon the plate so that the same may be readily adjusted to regulate the tension of the winding devices for controlling the awning roll F, located at a suitable point above the operating device and provided with the chain wheel G, over which passes the endless chain'E. The other end of the endless chain E passes over the sprocket wheel I, mounted upon the shaft J, journaled in said box T), and provided with an extended operating shank K, by means of which the sprocket wheel may be rotated to drive the chain and operate the awning. The said shaft J, is provided adjacent to the sprocket wheel I, within the boxing with the ratchet wheel L, which is engaged by the weighted pawl M, pivotally mounted within the casing and adapted to control the rotation of said shaft.
Now it is obvious that the tension of the endless chain E, will vary as the device is continually used and also is affected by heat, cold and wear. In order to provide for regulating the tension of this chain, the sliding winder box D, is provided with a threaded bolt or screw M, projecting from the bottom of the box and loosely working through the perforated lug O, standing off fromthe supporting plate A, centrally between the opposite guide grooves and below the same. The said screw-M, is engaged by the adjusting nut P, working thereon below the perforated lug and providing means for adjusting the box to the varying tension of the chain as desired. It will also be apparent that when desired the winding device may be entirely removed from the permanently secured supporting plate for any purpose desired.
The construction, and operation of the herein described awning operating device are now thought to be apparent.
