SAW-GUIDE.
.SPECTFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,325, dated March 5, 1895. Application filed June 3, 1893. Serial No. 476,548. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N.,ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Charles, in the parish of Oalcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in saw guides for wood sawing machines, by means of which the operator can laterally move the pins or plates which serve to guide and steady the saw, either simultaneously or independently, without leaving the position he occupies during the working'of the machine.
The object of the invention is to produce an improved device of the above character which shall be simple in construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of a saw guide constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view taken from a different angle. Fig. 3, is a horizontal sectional View. Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section on the line 0c.73, Fig. 3. Figs. 5, 6 and 7, are detail views.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1, designates the base plate, formed with a slot 2, by which it is adjustably connected with the frame of the machine, by means of bolts, not shown. This base is provided with vertical sides 3, 3, and an extension 4, at one end.
Located between the walls 3, 3, and horizontally slidabletherein is a box or block P, having a recess at one end to receive the shank or stem 5 of the inner guide-arm 7, provided with a guide pin or plate. This box consists of two parts 8 and 9, having semicircular recesses 10, therein, provided with a longitudinal groove 12, to receive a Babbitt metal rib 13, by which the parts are held together. The shank 5, is located in part 8.
It will be noted that when the parts are connected together a cylindrical space is formed, to receive the shank 14;, of the outer arm 15, having aguide pin or plate 16, similar to plate 17. A rectangular liner is placed between the part 9, and the side :3, adjoining thereto against which bear lightly set screws.
Working in a screw threaded bore in the inner end of arm 15, is a screw rod 18, of coarse mesh, provided with a worm wheel 19. This rod is journaled in the extension 4, and the worm wheel engages with a transverse worm shaft 20, also journaled in said extension and provided with an operating rod 21, and hand wheel 23.
Working in a screw-threaded recess in the inner end of the part 8, of the box 4*, is a screw shaft 24, having a worm wheel 25, which engages with a worm shaft 26, provided with an operating rod 27, and hand wheel 28, similar to those just above described.
The numeral 29, designates the top of the extension and 30, the main top, secured in place by bolts 31.
The operation will be readily understood.
The device is secured to the frame of the machine and the block or box 43, is adjusted by means of the screw shaft 24:, and its operating handle and hand wheel, so that the guide pin or plate on the arm 7 will contact with the inner face of the saw. The outer arm 15 is then similarly adjusted by actuating the shaft or rod 18 so that its guide pin or plate will bear against the opposite face of the saw. By this means the saw is guided and steadied in its operation. It will be noted that by the movement bodily, of the block or box at edected by the actuation of the shaft or rod 24:, both of the guide arms 7, 15, can be moved together; and that by aotuating the shaft or rod 18, the guide arm 15, alone, can be moved independently of the arm 7, the purpose of which is obvious. These operating rods are carried or extended to the point where the operator usually stands so as to be within easy reach.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a saw guide, the combination of the two part angular box or block formed with longitudinal grooves and a strip or rib of Babbitt metal seated in said grooves, and one of said boxes or blocks carrying a relative fixed guide arm, the movable guide arm having ta cylindrical shank endw'ise movable in a corresponding space formed by semi-cylindrical recesses in the parts of said box or block, a support for said box or block having a chamber in cross section conforming tothe cross section of said angular box or block, and adj usting screws one engaging said block or box and the other screw engagingsaid cylindrical [0 or axial shank of the movable guide arm, substantially as described.
