GATGHERS MITTEN.
Patented Mar 5,
INVENTOR BY JM WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY ra STATES ADOLF SLOMKA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CATCHERS MITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,178, dated March 5, 1895.
Application filed December 26, 18 94. Serial No. 632,956- (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLF SLOMKA, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catchers Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of handcoverings known as catchers mittens used by catchers on the left hand in the game of base ball; and the object of the invention is in part to cheapen the construction of the mitten and in part to provide it with a stiifening flange about the margin, adapted to keep the mitten in shape and thus add to its durability and to form a stiff protecting rim or flange about its edge.
In the accompanying drawings in which an embodiment of my invention is illustrated- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the mitten and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same on.
the line 02 00*, in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4. are fragmentary views on a somewhat larger scale, illustrating the manner of forming the stiff z 5 closing flange about the mitten.
Before proceeding to describe my invention I will say that it has been the practice heretofore to make a catchers mitten by preparing the front, padded portion and the back 01' o glove portion, separately, and then uniting 5 cord the mitten is lacking in stiffness about its margin and a flexure of the same opens the closure at the lacing.
According to my invention I construct the front and back separately, binding their margins all around, then bring the parts together and form a rigid closing flange by riveting the two bound margins together with eyelets. After the riveting, the flange is further stiffened by means of a double wire, wound in a spiral manner about the edge of the flange, the wire passing through the eyelets therein.
In the drawings1 represents the front of the mitten, which is stuffed with wool, 2, or the like, to form a cushion.
3 is the back of the mitten, provided as usual with a retaining glove, 4.
The parts 1 and 3 of the mitten have thelike contours and dimensions and are finished all around their margins with bindings, prefer ably of leather. These margins are then brought together and applied one on the other and riveted together by means of eyelets, 5, so as to form a stiff, projecting flange, 6. Two strands of wire, 7, are then rove through the eyelets, preferably in the spiral manner shown, to further close and stiffen the margins forming the flange.
Where the inner margin of the thumb, 8, lies close to the main part or body of the mitten, the flanges are firmly united by the wires at 7 to tie them rigidly and firmly together.
The lacing-string, 9, of the mitten. is passed about lacing-hooks, 10, and secured by a springclip, 11.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A catchers mitten having a permanently closed joint about its margin forming a stiff,
projecting flange, with apertures therein at intervals, and having wire rove through said apertures in spiral form over and about said flange, said wire serving as a permanent reinforce for the flange, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF SLOMKA.
