SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,061, dated March 5, 1 895.

- ful Improvements in Wire Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in wire fences of that class or description comprising aseries of horizontal wires secured to the fence posts and a number of vertical wires connected therewith at suitable intervals apart, and it is especially designed to provide an improved lock or stay for securing the vertical wires to the horizontal wires.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a section of a wire fence with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through one of the doubled vertical wires. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view. Fig. 4. is a similar view of the spring lock or stay.

In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the fence posts, and 2 the horizontal wires secured thereto in any suitable manner. Any number desired or found convenient may be employed.

The numeral 3 designates the vertical wires consisting of a wire rod bent over upon itself at the center, as seen in Fig. 1.

The numeral 4 designates the lock or stay consisting of a piece of spring metal wire, bent over upon itself at the center, forming twoarms 5, of equal length, the ends of which are bent into loops 6.

The manner of using my invention is as folws: At the points where the vertical wires re to be connected with the horizontal wires he latter are crimped or formed with a series of bonds 7. The stays 4 are then engaged with said horizontal wires, with the bends lyiug between the horizontal arms 5. The doubled wires are then clamped in place, one wire passing between the said bends and arms and the other wire passing through the loops 6, as seen more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3.

By the above construction a very efficient locking device is provided, which will allow for expansion and contraction by heat or cold, without in any manner affecting the same as the vertical wires will always be securely connected with the horizontal Wires.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a wire fence, the combination with the horizontal Wires having crimps or bonds therein, of the stays engaging with said bends consisting of the spring wire bent over upon itself at the center forming horizontal arms embracing said bends and formed with loops at the ends, and the double vertical wires one of which passes between said bends and arms and the other passing through said loops; substantially as described.
