WILLIAM A. HANVEY, OF BIG RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
. NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,876, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed June '7, 1 894. Serial No. 513,774. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. HANVEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Big Rapids, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements innut-locks; and itconsists in providing a side nut-lock with tapered projecting tongues which are adapted to be bent for engagement with the nut,the points and side edges of said tongues being beveled so as to afford ready means for inserting a tool beneath the tongues forbending them in engagement with the nut, the base portion or edges of the washer farthest from the locking tongues having means for engaging with a fish-plate or other object as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the nut-lock, showing my invention applied to the fish-plate of a railroad rail. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the nut-lock applied to a wooden surface.
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the nut-lock applied near a corner. Fig. is a vertical sec: tional view, and Fig. 5 is aview of a tool used in applying the nut and bending the tongues.
A designates the nut-lock which is provided with an aperture through which the bolt passes and a straight edge A which is adapted to bear against a flange, the corners of the look at each end of the straight edge being bent to I form prongs or teeth which will enter wooden surfaces and hold the lock or washer against rotation, as shown in Fig. 2, or overlap the edges of the object when the said washer is used adjacent to a corner, as shown in Fig. 3. When the object to be secured by the bolt and nut is provided with a flange the prongs or teeth are turned out, though they may be turned in without detriment to the device.
The washer is also provided with projecting points or tongues 73 b the edges of which are beveled on both sides so that a tool can be readily slipped under the points in bending them up.
It is obvious that when a lock washer of ordinary construction is applied the pressure of the nut thereon will bring the projecting points in close contact with the fish-plate or other object, and it is therefore difficult to insert a tool beneath the projecting points to bend them so that they will contact with the sides of the'nut. It is also difficult to bend the points out of contact with the not when it is desired to remove the same. By beveling both sides of the points I) Z) this objection is overcome and a tool with a tapered edge, as shown in Fig. 5, or other suitable implement having a chisel point, forms a convenient means for bending the points of the washer in and out of contact with the sides of the nut.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a locking plate or look washer for nuts with projecting portions which are adapted to be bent in engagement with the sides of the nut, said washer also having a flat portion which engages with a flange to hold the Washer against rotation, and I do not claim such construction as my invention, though my improvement is readily applicable to such a washer.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A look washer for nuts whichis provided with an aperture through which passes the bolt, said washer having means for holding the same against rotation on the bolt, and tapered projecting portions 1) b the edges of which are beveled on both sides, substantially as shown, so as to facilitate the passing of a tool under said projecting portions to bend the same in and out of contact with the sides of the nut.
' 2. A look washer for nuts made up of a plate of malleable meta1,one edge of said plate being serrated to provide projecting points I) I) both of the sides or edges of said points being beveled, substantially as shown and for eled on opposite sides, the corners at the ends the purpose set forth. of the straight edge being bent, substantially 3. As an improved article of manufacture as shown and for the purpose set forth. a lock-washer adapted for use with a bolt and In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 nut of the standard type, said look-washer in presence of two witnesses.
