SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,838, dated February 26, 1895. Application led August 30, 1894. Serial No. 521,699. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, MICHAEL W. MULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Pedals, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to attachments for pedals.

The object is to produce a device, by which the foot will be properly held upon the pedal, in a manner to prevent its slipping forward; and further, by which an equable distribution of the power applied, will be secured, in combining a downward and a forward pressure upon the pedal.

With the above objects in view, my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts as more fully described and pointedout in the claim.

rlhe invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure l, is a view in elevation, of one embodiment of the invention, applied to the pedal of a cycle, showing centrally mounted upon the pedal sleeve oppositely disposed plates, having the outer ends curvedy upward, in a manner to fit well up under the instep, against the heel of the shoe, as indicated, the connection to the sleeve being rendered secure, by the use Ofclamp bolts. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the device detached. Fig. 3, is a view in elevation, of the construction modiiied, for application to a pedal of the rat trap type.

In the drawings; A, represents the attachment, consisting of duplicate plates having the outer ends curved upward at a, and the inner ends curved or bent at an angle, and apertured to receive securing bolts, a2, by which they are removably attached to the sleeves of the pedals. Where the inner ends are curved, the plates are attached, by being bolted around the sleeve, and when bent at an angle, they are secured to the toothed bars of the pedal, as shown in Fig. 3.

The attachment is especially useful, where the machine is being propelled upon an ascending incline. By reason of the increased bearing surface afforded by the extension, and its action as a stop, to retain the foot against slipping forward upon the pedal, the propulsion of the machine will be rendered comparatively easy, owing to a proper distribution of the power applied.

Among the many advantages of the invention, may be mentioned the extreme sim plicity of construction and low cost of manufacture of the device, its application to any form of pedal, its effectiveness in operation and its ready attachment to or detachment from the pedal.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An attachment for pedals, comprising duplicate plates, removably secured by being bolted to the pedal, and oppositely disposed, to project beyond the pedal, the outer ends being curved upward, as specified.
