To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEON DREYFUS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Polishing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved tool for polishing the facets of diamonds, said tool being so constructed that the dop-holder may be quickly adjusted to the inclination of the facets, and that said holder may be quickly changed on its axis, so as to subject one facet after another with mathematical accuracy to the action of the polishing-disk; and the invention consists of a diamond-polishing tool, provided with an arm extending over the polishing disk, said arm being provided with a slot of tapering shape and with an aperture at the lower end of said slot, an arcshaped frame on the upper part of said arm provided with means for clamping the spindle of the dop-holder, means for adj nsting and clamping the holder to the lower end of the spindle, said holder being provided with a convex top-part and with a socket and clamping-device in its lower part for securing the shank of the dop, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In t-he'accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation partly in section, of my improved diamond-polishing tool. Fig. 2 is a side-elevation drawn on a larger scale of the dop-holder. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4--4, Fig. 1, through the arc-shaped guide-frame showing the means for clamping the spindle of the dop-holder to the guide-frame.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting arm of my improved diamond-polishing tool, which arm is provided at one end with a base A, which is attached to a table or other suitable support in such relative position to the rotating polishiugdisk that the arm A extends to a suificient extent over the disk. The arm A is preferably arranged in horizontal position and provided with a slot at of tapering shape in its outer end, said slot Serial No. 514,362. (No model.)
having its aperture a in the base of the arm, said aperture permitting the insertion of the spindle B of the dop-holder O.
To the upper part of the supporting-arm A is applied an arc-shaped,frame D, which is made concentric with the aperture a at the lower end of the slot in said arm, said. frame being graduated and provided with a concentric slot d for the shank of a clampingscrew 1), which engages the spindle B, so that the latter can be rigidly clamped to the frame B by the screw, and the holder placed thereby at any suitable inclination toward the horizontally-rotating polishing-disk. When the holder is adjusted to the proper inclination toward the disk, the clamping-nut b is tightened, so that the holder is firmly held in position. The diamond, that is held in the dop E in the usual well-known manner, is thereby adjusted to a corresponding inclination, so that its facet can be subjected to the polishing action of the disk.
The dop-holder O is made of cylindrical shape and provided with aconvex top-section O, which latter has a central opening .for the spindle B. The convex top-section C bears against the under side of the arm A so that the spindle B can be moved freely in the tapering slot a and aperture a, the convex top 0, spindle B and aperture a, forming a pivotal connection between the arm A and dopholder 0. The convex top-section O is screwed or otherwise attached to the body of the holder C and provided at its bottom with a shoulder that extends into a central cylindrical recess of the dop-holder O, in which recess the enlarged cylindrical end portion 13' of the spindle B is located. The end portion B is provided in its circumference with as many equi-distant depressions bas required by the number of facets of the diamond to be polished, said depressions being engaged by a clamping-screw b which engages a threaded hole in the dop-holder C, so that it can clamp the cylindrical end-portion B of the spindle rigidly in position in the holder. By loosening the screw and turning the holder on its axis until the clamping-nut arrives at the next adjacent depression, the holder can be successively turned on its axis and clamped in position after each adjustment, so that one facet after the other of the diamond can be polished. The dop E is provided with a shank e, which is inserted into a corresponding socket in the lower part of the holder C, the shank 6 being likewise clamped by a clamping-screw e, which passes through athreaded hole in the holder and engages a notch e in the shank of the dop, as shown in Fig. 3. The shank e of the'dop is further provided with a shoulder e which abuts against a corresponding shoulder to the socket of the holder (J, to enable the workman to replace the dop in exactly the same position, after inspecting the diamond during the polishing operation. The required adjustment of the spindle is produced by the guide-frame D and the clamping-nut b, by which the inclination of the axis of the holder, dop and diamond is given toward the polishing-disk, while by the adjustment of the holder on the cylindrical endportion B of the spindle, the axial position of the diamond on the spindle is changed, so that one facet of the diamond. after the other can be subjected with mathematical precision to the polishing action of the disk.
My improved diamond-polishing tool has the advantages first, that by its comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, it forms a very convenient device for diamond-polishers, as by it the facets of the diamond can be polished quickly and with great accuracy, second, that the dop can be readily removed for inspection of the diamond and replaced in the holder, and that theinclination of the dop to the proper angleof the facet to the polishing disk and the axial adjustment of the same can be readily and quickly accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Adiamond-polishingtool, composed of a supporting arm having a tapering slot, an arc-shaped guide-frame extending over said slot at-its larger end, a dop-holder provided with a central spindle extending through said slot, means for clamping the spindle to said guide-frame, and means for adjusting the dop-holder axially on the spindle, substantially as set forth.
2. A diamond-polishing tool, composed of a supporting-arm, having a slot, an arc-shaped guide-frame attached to the arm and extendin g across the slot, a dop-holder provided with a convex top-portion, a spindle inserted in said holder and extending through the slot in the arm and the guide-frame, means for clamping the spindle to the guide-frame, a cylindrical portion at the lower end of said spindle and means for adjusting the dopholder axially on the end-portion of the spindle, substantially as set forth.
3. A diamond-polishing tool, consisting of a supporting-arm having a slot terminating in an aperture at the under side of the arm, an arc-shaped guide-frame extending over said slot, a dop-holder having a convex top abutting against the under side of the arm, a spindle for said dop-holder and means for clamping the spindle to said guide-frame, substantially as set forth.
4:. A diamond-polishing tool, consisting of a supporting-arm having a slot, an arc-shaped guide-frame extending over said slot, a dopholder, having a convex top-portion, a spindle provided with a cylindrical portion at its lower end insertedinto the recess of the holder, means for clamping the holder to the cylindrical portion of the spindle, and means for clamping the shank of the dop to the holder, substantially as set forth.
5. A diamond-polishing tool composed of a supporting-arm having a suitable slot, an arcshaped guide-frame extending over said slot, a dop-holder provided with a spindle, means for clamping the spindle to said guide-frame, means for adjusting the dop-holder axially on the spindle, a dop provided with a shank having a shoulder or lug, said dop-holder having a socket for receiving the shank and corresponding in shape to the shank and its shoulder, substantially as set forth.
