Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BODINE FRAZIER AND HOMER WIOKES, OF OONNEAUTVILLE, PA.
IMPROVED BALANCE-BEAM FORBORING OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,434, dated March :27, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN BODINE FRAZIER and HOMER WICKES, of Oonneautville, Grawtord county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Balance Walking-Beam for Boring` Oil-Wells; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the aecompanyingdrawingsandletters ofreference I marked thereon.
Figure l represents our invention with all its parts adjusted in working order. Ais the sampson post; B O the Walking-beam, the drill being attached to the end B, and the engine to the end O, in the usual manner. E F is a sand or weight vbox resting,` on the iron bar K K on the end O of the walking-beam. This box is constructed in two parts, E and F, attached together by bars of Wood or metal, as shown at Fig. 2, by 3 4. G is Va strap of wood or metal bolted on the part E of the Weight-box. In the lower part or end of this strap is a slot and key, H, to fasten the weightbox at any desired point on the walking-beam. l and 2 are rollers on which the Weight-box E F hangs, rendering it easily moved or adjusted.
The lower part, F, of the weight-box is hung on the straps 3 4 by a bolt or bolts, 5 6 6 5, Fig. 2. f
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of our invention, showing the key H, the roller 1, the straps 3 and 4, and the parts E and F of the weightbox. l
Our machine works as follows; to Wit: The drill is attached to the end B of the Walkingbeam, and the weight-box E F is lled with the desired amount of sand, and by the mechanical constructions heretofore described is moved and adjusted on the walking-beam so as to balance the drill. By this means great power is saved in operating the drill.
Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Weight-box E F, with the strap G, key H, and rollers l and 2, in combination with the beam B O, constructed as described, and for the purposes set forth.
