NATHANIEL W. FOYE, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED SCRAPER AND KNIFE AND FORK CLEANER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,433, dated March 27 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL W. FoYE, of' Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Combined Scraper and Knife and Fork Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my eom bined scraper and knife and fork cleaner. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same.
The ordinary scraper used in households for a variety of' purposes consists of a thin -piece of' board brought to a dull edge. The rigidity wet surfaces, floors, paint, Ste., the flexible edge readily adapting itself' to the inequalities of the surface over which it is rubbed, leaving it dry and clean at one operation, thus economizing labor.
To one side of the block or holder A is secured a piece of' rubber, leather, or other suitable material, B, of the required thickness, which is to he used asa knife and fork scourer and cleaner.
In one side of the block A is fori/ned a cavity, into which is inserted a piece of' sponge,C, a passage, c, lea-ding from this cavity to the outer surface of' the rubber B, so that on the sponge being saturated and pressure applied the water will pass to the outer surface ofthe rubber for the purpose of' moistening the sub- *j ofthi's edge, however, prevents itfrom adaptstance used in scouring the knife or other ing itself' to the inequalities ofthe surface bearticle. ing scraped, consequentlyrequiringthescraper I do not conne myself' to the position of to be passed overit a number of times in order the'rubber B represented, as it may be placed to leave it clean and dry. A at either end of the block A or extended over Ik My invention consists in a scraper having the sides, if' preferred.
one or more flexible edges combined with a Instead ot' the holder A being' provided knife and fork cleaner, thus producing a neat with one flexible strip, a, only, a holder may and useful implement for household use. be made with two or more flexible strips, form- 4 To enable others skilled in the art to undering scraping-edges, without departing' from stand and use my invention, I will proceed to the spirit of my invention, and a handle may describe the manner in which I have carried be attached to the holder, if desired. it out. The above-described implement is of simple 1n the said drawings, A is a block of wood, construction, and will be found exceedingly lnetal, orothersuitable material, of suehaform, useful for a variety of purposes, While it may as seen in Fig. l, that it can be easily grasped be furnished at a 10W cost. by the hand. At thelower end of the block or What I claim as my invention, and desire r holder A is formed a dovetailed groove, into to secure by Letters Patent, is-
which is inserted a narrow strip, (t, of Vulcanized rubber or its equivalent, of a suitable thickness to make its edge sufficiently rigid f'or scraping. rlhis strip a is secured in its groove by means of' pins b, or in any other suitable manner.
A scraper thus constructed may be used to great advantage in scraping and cleaning The within-described implement, consisting ofl a scraper having one or more flexible edges combined with a knife and fork cleaner, operating substantially as described.
