To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that we, HORACE E. GREN- WOOD and JOHN W.V GRANTLAND, citizens of the United States, residing at vthe city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and Stateof Pennsylvania, have jointlyin- .vented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets, of which the following is a specication. l

Our invention has relation to a water-closet in which a removable lid kor seat is employed in connection therewith; and it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of the water-closet bowl provided with pockets or socketsand to a lid or seat provided with a knuckle-jointed swiveling spring device adapted to removably engage'the pockets or sockets of said bowl to permit not only of the raising and lowering of the lid or seat, but also of the fready removal of the same from the bowl. l

v The principal objects of our invention are first, to provide asimple, 'durable and effective water-closet with va lid or seat so arranged as to be readily removed from the same; second, to provide a water-closet bowl with re-` cessed pockets `0r sockets and a lid or seat or both hinged to each other and provided with` a knuckle-jointed swiveling spring clamping device adapted to detachably'seat with the pockets or sockets of said bowl; third, to provide a spring'clamping device with concealing strips orvaps having a swiveling knucklejointed plate adapted to be secured to a lid or seat and of the said clamping device to engage pockets or sockets of a water-closet bowl in such manner as that the same can be instantly removed for cleaning and other purposes and at the same time so arranged as that in its engagement with the sockets orA trance openin gs; and fifth, to provide a watercloset in which a lid-or seat removably engages recessed pockets or sockets formed in Arear projections of the bowl in order to afford not only an ease of movement of the lid or seat or both in the connection established with the bowl, but also Aa quick removal of the lid or seat or both hinged together therefrom. Y

Our invention stated in general terms, consists of a water-closet bowl provided with pockets orsocketsjfor the reception of spring clamping devices having swiveling knucklejointed connections with a lid or seat, whereby the lid or seat or both may be removed from the pockets or sockets of said bowl for cleansing and maintaining the Awater-closet in a thoroughly good sanitary condition; and our invention further consists of the improvements in water-closets hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature and characteristic features of\ our invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the rear portion of a water-closet bowl, showing one of the pockets or sockets thereof and also a lid and seat hinged to each other, and the latter provided with a knuckle-jointed swivel connection with a spring clamping device having concealing strips and depending tingers, the latter adapted to prevent sidewise movement in 'the engagement of .the said clamping'device with the pockets or sockets Iof .said bowl. f Fig. 2, is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a slightly modified form of spring clamping devioecafforded two -dierent motions in the connection of the same with a lid or seat and in the engagement of the said device with the recessed pockets or sockets of the water-closet bowl; and Fig. 3, is a rear view of the lid and seat and a transverse sectional view through one of the pockets or sockets of the watercloset bowl and of the spring clamping device of Fig. 2, for establishing a removable connection of the lid and seat with the water-closet bowl.

Referring to the drawings with reference more particularly to Fig. 1, a., is the rear portion of a water-closet bowl provided with end recessed pockets or sockets a2, having top and side entrance openings a3 and o4, leading into the same, and the said pockets or sockets be- IOO ing preferably of the shape or configuration illustrated.

c, is a plate screwed to the bottom of the seat b', and provided with a knuckle-joint connection c', having a threaded stem or shank c2, engaging a complementally threaded truncated cone or other shape cap formed preferably with a right angular concealing strip c3, with rounded inner and lower ends c4 and c5.

c6 and ci', are depending fingers secured to or formed integral with the top and side plates of the concealing strip c3. Between the ngers o6 and c7, is provided a steel or other metal spring clamp C, comprising two jaws cs and e9. Flaring outwardly and curving inwardly toward the base ends thereof and extending crosswise between the two jaws of the clamp C, is inserted a pin or rod c1", for strengthening the upper inner end of the jaws of the clamping device and also to hold the jaws apart required distances so as to insure a proper springing action of the same into engagement with the complementally arranged recessed pockets or sockets a2, of the water closet bowl a, and the ngers gG and g'f, of the spring clamping device C, arranged as shown in Fig. l, prevent sidewise movement of the spring jaws c8 and c, thereof in engagement with the pockets or sockets of the bowl a.

In Figs. 2 and 3, the pockets or sockets of the water-closet bowl o., are the same in construction and arrangement as in Fig. 1, and the lid b, is hinged to the seat b', in the saine manner as hereinbefore explained with reference to Fig. 1, of the drawings, but the spring clamping device diders from that of Fig. 1, in the following manner: The plate c, screwed to the bottom of the seat 1J', is provided with a circular perforated tongue 01"', engaging-between spherical bearings 013 and c, to constitute by the pivotal connection of the said tongue therewith a knuckle-joint connection c', and the spherical bearings C13 and c, are provided with a tapering base 015, seating in a complemental bearing o16, of the anged top-plate c1, of the concealing strip This base G15, is held to position in its bearings c, by means of a plate 018, provided with depending integral fingers c* and c7. The plate 018, seats in the recessed under portion of the iianged top plate c, by means of a screw 019, and one of the said iin gers is held to position against the side plate c5, of the concealing strip c3, by means of a screw c2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The clamp consists of two spring metal jaws es and c, of the same form or shape as those of Fig. 1, and are inserted and supported to required position between the fingers c and c7, in the manner hereinbefore described.

The arrangement of 4the swiveling spring clamping device C, in Figs. 2 and 3, permits of a free back and forth movement of the lid with a seat hinged thereto, as well as a free turning around of both of said members in the readily removable connection of said device with the recessed pockets or sockets 0,2, of the bowl a.

Among the advantageous features of our invention may be mentioned the fact, that the lid with its seat having the swiveling spring clamp connection removably established with the pockets or sockets of the water-closet bowl insures perfect working of the lid and its seat, as well as a quick removal of both hinged members from the bowl for thoroughly cleansing the water-closet with the least amount of time and labor of maintaining the closet ina perfectly good sanitary condition from a hygiene standpoint.

It will be manifestly obvious to those skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, that as to minor details modifications in the form or shape of the spring clamping device may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the nature and objects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A water-closet bowl provided with pockets or sockets, a lid or seat, a knuckle-jointed connection, one member of which is attached to said lid or seat and the other member having concealing strips and clamping jaws engaging the pockets or sockets of said bowl, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. A water-closet bowl provided with recessed pockets or sockets having top and side entrance openings, a lid or seat, and a knucklejointed connection, one member of which is attached to said lid or seat and the other having spring clamping jaws detachably engaging said pockets or sockets, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. A water-closet bowl provided with pockets or sockets, a lid or seat, a concealing strip a knuckle-jointed connection, one member of which is attached to said lid or seat and the other detachably connected with said concealing strip and depending spring clamping jaws and lingers, substantially as and for the purposes described.

4. A water-closet bowl provided with recessed pockets or sockets, a lid or seat, a concealing strip having spring metal jaws movably engaging said pockets or sockets, a knuckle-jointed connection, one member of which is secured to said lid or seat and the other by a swivel joint connected with said concealing strip, substantially as and for the purposes described.

5. A water-closet bowl provided with pockets or sockets, a lid or seat, a knuckle-joint connection, one member of `which is secured to said lid or seat and the other member provided with two spring clamping jaws and iingers engaging said pockets or sockets, substantially as and for the purposes described.
