Be it known that I, CHARLES DOEHRNG, of New York, N. Y., have invented an Improved Electric Bathing Apparatus, of' which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an electric bathing apparatus by which the bather is subjected to the joint action of metallo therapeutics and a dry bathing medium.

My improved apparatus consists essentially of two flexible metal sheets between which an electric current is generated and of a bed of heated sand in which the bather is packed while subjected tothe electric action between the sheets,

In Fig. l, d and e are the upper and lower flexible metallic sheets, of which one constitutes in effect a mattress and the other a cover. The lower sheet c I prefer to construct of textile fabric with interwoven metal strands, while the upper sheet d is preferably composed of linked wire or wire netting Between the sheets d, c, electric action is maintained either by constructing one sheet of .zinc and the other of copper and connecting them at one end by a wire f, or by connecting both sheets to a battery or other source of electricity by the line wires f.

The sheets d, e, are used in connection with beddingcof heated sand, which packs around the bather and the sheets. This sand will cause the bather to perspire freely and the moisture thus obtained will intensify the electric action between the sheets d, c. In this way a continuous therapeutic action is maintained, which has hitherto not been practicable, and highly beneficial results for the bather will be produced.

In Figs. 2 to 5, the invention is shown to be applied to a bathtub a, in which hot air or sand may be used as the bathing medium. Here the bathtub is provided with a false bottom a', so as to produce a hot air or steam jacket a2. The tub is lined with wooden slats b, to prevent accidental contact between the bather and the heated tub. Into the jacket a2 leads a pipe a adapted for the introduction of hot air or steam, while a second pipe Serial No. 515,363. (No model!) et, leads directly into the body of the tub. The pipe d4, is provided with two laterally-extending outlets, that discharge if desired, steam, water or hot air into the body of san-d c with which the tub may be completely or partially filled. Within the tub a are suspended the iiexible metallic sheets d and e, constructed as previously described,between which the electric action is maintained and connected if desired to a battery h. The sheets d and c, are suspended from the head and foot board of the bath tub by means of hooks g, as shown.

In use the jacket d2 is filled with hot air or steam7 while the tub itself may be filled with sand. The heated jacket will keep the sand at such a high temperature as is necessary to produce the desired effect upon the bather. If the sand is omitted, the perspiration of the bather is effected by the air within the tub heated by the jacket d2.

The sand may be admiXed with shot, salt or other electric conductor, to strengthen the electric action between the metal sheets.

By my apparatus, I am enabled to subject the entire surface of the body to electric action by a simultaneous application of metallotherapeutics and arenation and thus treatments in which external moistening of any part of the human body must be avoided, may be readily effected.

l.Vhat I claim is-H l. A bathing apparatus composed of two iiexible metal sheets adapted to form a support and a covering for the bather, and between which an electric current is adapted to be generated, substantially as specified.

2. A bathing apparatus composed of two flexible metal sheets constituting electrodes and of an interposed dry packing, substantially as specified.

3. A bathing apparatus composed of a tub having a heating jacket and of a pairof flexible metal sheets suspended therein and con` stituting electrodes, substantially as specified.

at. An electric bath composed of a flexible metallic support, a flexible covering, constituting either electrodes or electric generators, and a dry bathing medium, substantially as specified.
