Be it known that I, FRENK SCHILKOVSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of W'ayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Burial-Gaskets; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to burial caskets and its object is, to provide means whereby the bodyin the casket may be viewed with greater convenience than heretofore.

My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a view of a casket partly in elevation and partly in vertical section. Fig. 2, is a transverse section. Fig. 3, is a View of a casket partly in elevation and partly in section, showing a variation in construction. Fig. 4, is a view showing a casket of a diflferent pattern. Fig. 5, is a view showing the oval glass cover supported in the end of the casket.

In the drawings A is the lower half of the body of a casket, and A is the upper half made removable from the line a. upward. B is a glass cover, wholely within and independent of the removable upper half of the body. This glass cover is preferably made in one piece, as shown in Fig. 1, and is oval in cross section to adapt it to sustain pressure from above. If desired this glass can be made heavy enough to adapt it to the purposes of a cover over the contents of the casket when the casket decays in the ground. The lower edges of this glass cover may be engaged with 0 a frame and the frame hinged to the lower half of the body, or it may be fitted to the casket and be lifted out when the body is placed therein. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the glass cover is made in three pieces, joined together at b after the manner of constructing show-cases and like articles.

In the form shown in Fig. 4 the cover is made of a single piece of glass in cross section like that shown in Fig. 2, but supported in the end of the body of the casket which is raised to correspond with the curve of the glass.

The use of the glass cover shown herein obviates the difficulty experienced in viewing the body of a deceased person after it has been placed in the casket. It is not necessary to approach and lean over the casket in order to look into it, as the body is visible from the sides and from a distance.

What I claim is- Aburial casket consisting of a body divided in a horizontal plane through its longitudinal center, a raised transparent sub-lid, resting on the upper edge of the body, and the opaque lid, the lid forming the upper half resting on the body and covering the raised glass lid, whereby the corpse may be viewed from the side when the top lid is removed, substantially as described.
