TIME-RECORDER OR TiCKET-STAMP.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIs E. PADDAGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time-Recorders or Ticket-Stamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in time recorders or ticket stamps and has particular relation to that class of stamps which are employed for stamping the date, the exact time of the day, whether A. M. or P. M. and other information, upon a ticket, transfer or like article.
It consists of the combination with a casing of a clock mechanism contained therein, a fixed stamping clock dial, movable stamping dials within said fixed dial and carrying respectively raised hour and minute pointers and connected to and operated by the clock mechanism, a stamp for indicating the period of the day whether before or after meridian and connected to said clock mechanism and adapted to be automatically operated thereby, a carriage provided with an inking roller, a platen pivoted to said casing and adapted to be forced upward by the forward movement of said carriage and means for operating said carriage from the outside of the casing whereby a ticket introduced into said casing will be forced into contact with the stamps and receive an impression therefrom.
It further consists of certain other constructions and combinations of parts, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

The casing A is closed by hinge doors a and a, the former opening horizontally outward and the latter vertically upward. The door a is provided with a projecting dowel pin 0. which when said door is closed, enters a dowel recess a in the door a as the latter is closed and thus the door a is prevented from opening until the said door a is opened; the door 0t being secured by any suitable lock.
The frame B which supports the clock mechanism and rubber stamping dials actuated thereby, is hinged in the casing A at the point I) so that when the doors a and a are opened the said frame can be swung up into a vertical position and the rubber-stamping dials and type readily examined and adjusted. This frame is held in its lowered position by a spring catch 1).
The stamping devices consist of a fixed clock dial D provided with raised figures,preferably rubber, representing the numerals of the face of a clock, a movable ring dial plate at connected to the hour wheel of the clock mechanism by a sleeve 0 and provided with a raised pointer d preferably rubber, for indicating the hour on the fixed dial, another dial (1 operating within the dial d and connected to the minute shaft of the clock mechanism which passes loosely through the said sleeve 0. This dial is provided with a raised pointer d preferably rubber, for indicating the minutes on the fixed dial. On each side of the fixed dial 1 provide dovetail guideways f, see Fig. 2, which are adapted to receive the type, preferably rubber, for indicating the month and day of the month. These type are changed by hand when it becomes necessary to change the date by slipping out the old type and inserting new ones.
Fixed raised letters, preferably of rubber, and containing information as to the line upon which the ticket is to be issued are attached to frame B in proximity to the clock dial 1) so as to give an impression at the same time therewith. A stamp M indicating either one of the meridian signs and preferably made of rubber, is also attached to the frame B in proximity to the said clock dial. It is desirable that the stamp should indicate whether the time is before or after meridian and to accomplish this I provide the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 3, i and 5. This mechanism consists of a cam like projection or arm h rigidly mounted on the sleeve 0 and turning therewith. A longitudinally sliding rod G is supported by bearings g, g, in proximity to said cam and is provided with an arm g so situated as to be engaged by said cam and thereby force the said rod in one direction and a springj is connected to said rod which forces it in the other direction. A pawl H is pivoted to on e end of said rod and is adapted to engage a ratchet wheel h mounted on a shaft 7t which is journaled in bearings 75 and carries an octagonal drum K. The drum Kis provided on every other one of its eight sides with a raised letter, preferably rubber, said letters being alternately A and P and the drum is adapted to work through an aperture Z in proximity to the clock dial so as to bring either the letter A or P, according to which is uppermost, on the same horizontal plane with the clock dial. The drum is revolved with a quick snapping action by the cam 72. moving the rod G longitudinally, as it revolves with the sleeve carrying the hour hand. This movement is resisted by the springj so that when the cam slips off the end of the arm g the rod Gsnaps quickly back into place and the pawl H carried thereby engages the ratchet wheel and quickly revolves it one notch, thus revolving the drum K also and presenting a new letter uppermost. To prevent the drum from turning or slipping out of position after being turned by the pawl, I provide the shaft with a small ratchet or milled wheel 0 which is engaged by asmall spring pressed pawl mounted on the frame in proximity thereto and this always holds the drum under some friction and keeps it from slipping about.
The carriage E is composed of a hollow frame, within and at the upper part of which is journaled an inking roller L preferably composed of felt covered with silk. This carriage is adapted to slide in guides m mounted in the bottom of the casing'and is restrained in its rearward movement by a spring "n.
The platen F is provided with a downwardly projecting nose F and spring clips f which are adapted to hold the ticket in place on said platen when said ticket is introduced through a slot A in the door a. Said platen is pivotally mounted on a rod f in said casing and normally lies within the carriage E but upon the same being pushed backward by the operating rod 0 which is removably screwed into the front thereof, the inclined surface of the front bar 6 of said carriage engages first the under side of the platen and then the nose F and thus forces it upward and the ticket thereon receives an impression from the dial stamp. As the carriage is reciprocated'back and forth the inking roller passes over the face of the rubber type and also over an ink supply pad P and thus the type are always inked thoroughly between each impression.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the only operation necessary to stamp a ticket with the exact time and date that it is issued, is to insert the ticket as far as possible in the slot A and press the operating rod 0 inward as far as it will go.
The principal use of the invention is in connection with transfers used on car lines as with this device the conductors issuing the transfers must stamp the same with the exact minute they are issued and the conductor receiving them also stamps them on the opposite side when received and it can thus be seen at a glance just what amount of time the passenger has taken to make the transfer. (See Fig. 8.)
The conductors cannot tamper with the operating mechanism of the stamp as it is all contained within the casing and can only be reached by opening the door with a suitable key. Any wrongful alteration of the stamp is thus prevented and the conductors must stamp the ticket with the proper time.
It is obvious that this device may be used for a great many other analogous purposes as a watchmans time recorder or any other purpose in which a time stamp is desirable.
What 1 claim as my invention is 1. In a ticket stamp or time recorder the combination of an outer case provided with a passage for the insertion of a ticket, a stamp arranged within said casing, clock mechanism for operating the same, a movable carriage carrying an inking roller, a platen pivoted in said casing and adapted to be forced upward as the carriage is moved forward, means for returning the carriage to its forward position substantially as described.
2. The combination in a time recorder or ticket stamp of a casing having a ticket stamp, a clock mechanism in said casing, a fixed stamping clock dial, movable dial stamps within said fixed dial and carrying respectively raised hour and minute pointers and connected to and operated by the clock mechanism, stamps for indicating the period of the day whether before or after meridian and connected to said clock mechanism and adapted to be automatically changed thereby, a movable carriage carrying an inking roller and mounted below said stamp and adapted to be actuated from the exterior of the casing and a platen pivotally connected. to said casing and adapted to be forced upward by the movement of said carriage, against said stamps, substantially as described.
3. In a time recorder the combination of an outer casing having a hinged front door provided with locking means and a slot for the introduction of a ticket to be stamped, a hinged top cover which is adapted to be held down by the front door, a hinged upwardly swinging frame carrying a stamp and clock mechanism for operating the same and a movable carriage located beneath said stamp and carrying an inking roller and a pivoted platen adapted to be operated by the movement of the carriage, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a time recorder or ticket stamp of a casing having hinged side and top doors and a ticket slot, a clock mechanism within said casing, a fixed stamping dial movable'stamping dials having raised pointers and connected respectively to the hour and minute devices of the clock mechanism and operated thereby, slides for containing removable type in proximity to said stamping dials, a drum carrying stamps for indicating the periods of the day and automatically operated by the clock mechanism, a sliding carriage carrying an inking roller, an inking pad for inking said roller as it is reciprocated with said carriage, a rod connected to said carriage and passing out of the casing, a spring for restraining the movement of the said carriage and a pivoted platen provided with ticket holding clips and adapted to be operated by the movement of said carriage, substantially as described.
