I SHAPE-METAL-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,988, dated January 22, 1895 Application filed October 17,1894. Serial'No. 526,184. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, LEROY S. PFOUTS, a; citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Imp ovements in Shape-Metal-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation, showing parts i section to illustrate the location, and arrangement of the different parts. Fig. 2, is a detached view of the die holding block or head, showing the dies properly located with reference to said head. Fig. 3, is a detached view of one of the'dies. Fig. 4, is a top view of the die-block or head, showing the dies properly located. "Fig. 5, isa vertical section through line 50 cc, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a top view of the die-block or head showing the -clamping bars properly located to clamp a beam.
The present invention has relation to shape metal cutting machines, and it consists in the difierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numbers indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the-accompanying drawings, 1 represents the base, which is formed of sufi'icient size and strength to carry out the object andpurpose hereinafter described. To the top or upper side of the base 1, are securely attached in any convenient and well known manner the arched side members 2, which side members are preferably inclined inward toward their top or upper ends and are formed of heavy metal so as to give to the machine proper the desired amount of strength. The top or upper ends of the arched side members 2, are provided with the apertures 3, which apertures receive the bearings 4, which bearings are preferably formed integral with cylinder 5, and are for the purpose of supporting and holding said cylinder. Within the cylinder 5 is located the piston-head 6, to which pistonhead'is securely attached the piston rod 7.
,Said piston rod is extended downward, and
its bottom or lower end is provided with the plungenhead 8, to which plunger-head is rigidly attached the cutting blade 9, said cuttingblade being located and arranged substantiallyas illustrated in the drawings. Below the cylinder .5 is located the brace 10, which brace is securely attached to said cylinder and forms the bottom or lower portion thereof,and also acts as a guide for the plunger 8. The side guides 11 are securely attached to the bottom or lower end of the brace 10, or if desired said side guides or plates may be formed separately and securely attached in any convenient and well known manner.
The plunger 8 is provided with the crossarm 12, to which cross-arm are journaled the rollers 13, which rollers are for the purpose hereinafter described. To the side members 2 are attached or cast with said side members the horizontal bars 14, which horizontal bars are each provided with the flaring openings 15,
which openings are for the purpose of allowing the plunger-head to move up and down and oscillate as hereinafter described.
To the sides of the plunger 8 and its cut ting blade are located the cylinders 16 and 17, which cylinders are securely attached to the base 1 or its equivalent, and are located directly opposite each other. The cylinders 16 and -17 are each provided with pistonheads which piston-heads are formed of sufficient length to act as guides for the piston rods '18 and 19, said piston rods being pivotally attached at their inner ends to the plates 11. The cylinders 16 and 17 are preferably formed open upon their inner ends inasmuch as pressure is applied only to the outer ends; but it will be understood that if it is desired to apply pressure upon both sides of the piston heads, th en in that event the cylinders 16 and 17 should be closed at both ends. The die block or head 20 is attached to the top or upper side of the base 1, and is located substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. To the die block or head 20 are securely attached the dies 21, which dies are provided with the recesses 22, said recesses being for the purpose of receiving the flanges of an I beam or channel-bar as illustrated in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of providing suitable dies for cutting the flanges of I beams, the vertical edges 23 are formed, which vertical edges are located upon the dies, substantially as illustrated in Fig.
For the purpose of properly clamping an I beam to be cut the clamping bars 2a are provided, which clamping-bars are located over the die block or head 20, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and'G. To the clamping-bars 24; are securely attached the rods 25, which rods extend downward, and to their bottom or lower ends are attached the cross-bars 26, to which cross-bars are attached the connecting links 27 and the bottom or lower ends of said connecting links attached to the levers 28, which r5 levers are fulcrumed to the lugs 29 or their equivalents. Thelevers 28 extend to one side of the die-block or head 20, and their free ends connected together by the cross-bar 30,"
to which cross-bar is attached the piston rod 31, to which piston rod is attached the pistonhead 31, said piston head being located and operated in the cylinder 32.
It will be understood that as the free ends of the levers 28 are forced downward the clamping-bars 24 will be brought down upon the I beam; and for the purpose of causing the clamping-bars to rest upon the'I beam, the notches 33 are provided in the die block or head 20. o In use the beam designed to be cut is placed upon the die-block or head 20, and properly clamped after which pressure is brought upon the top or upper side of the piston head 6,
thereby lowering the plunger-h ead 8, together with the cutting blade '9, which movement forces the cutting blade 9 through the web of the beam. After the cutting blade has been brought or forced to its lowest point pressure is brought upon one of the heads located in the cylinder 16 or 17 which swings or oscillates the cutting blade 9 together with the cylinder 5, and its djiferent parts, also swinging or oscillating the brace 10, together with the plates 11. After the cutting blade 9 has been forced or swung to its extreme throw in one direction pressure-is brought to bear upon the opposite cylinder head, thereby swinging or oscillating the cutting blade 9 in the opposite direction.
The swinging or oscillating movements of the cutting blade together with its plunger and different parts is for the purpose of cutting the flanges of an I beam.
hen the cutting blade 9 has been oscil lated to cut the flanges of an I. beam or channel bar, pressure is brought to bear upon the bottom or under side of the piston-head 6, thereby elevating the cutting blade together with its different parts and for the purpose of bringing the plunger-head 8, together with its cutting blade into true vertical position, the flaring openings are provided which by means of the cross arm 12 and the rollers 13 automatically bring the plunger head and its different parts into a true perpendicular position. For the purpose of holding the oseillating parts in trueperpendicular position, an equal amou nt of pressure shouldbebrought against'the outer ends of the piston heads located in the cylinders 16 and 17, this object being brought about by partially opening the valves 34, which valves are operated in unison by means'of the connecting rod 35, and the rock-arms 30, said connecting-rod being operated by means of a suitable lever such as illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 1.
For the purpose of providing for oscillating the cylinder 5, and at the same time allow steam or water to be admitted into the cylinder either at its top or bottom, the pipes 37 are connected together by means ot' the division 38, which division 3S eXtends through a horizontal extension or continuation of the pipes 37, thereby allowing said horizontal portion to partially rotate, as the pipes 37 oscillate, it being understood that the lower pipe 37, is free to swing between the inner edges of the side members 2.
For the purpose of causing pressure to be brought at will upon either side of the piston head 6, the lever 39 is provided, which lever opens and closes the proper inlet by means of the valve 40, which valve is provided with the proper ports 11. For the purpose of allowing the water or steam to escape, the exhaust ports 42 are provided, which are located in the valve 40, said exhaust ports leading to the chamber 13, to which chamber is attached in any convenient and well known manner the exhaust pipe ll. The supply chamber or cylinder 45 may be located as illustrated in. Fig. 5, to which is attached the supply pipe 46. g
If in the event steam is used it will be understood that the pipe 46 is to lead from an ordinary steam boiler. For the purpose of assisting in holding the die-block or head 20 in proper position upon the base 1, the flanges 47 are provided, which flanges are preferably formed integral with the base.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shape metal cutting machine a base provided with the side members 2, having journaled at their top or upper ends a c'ylinder, a piston head located within said cylinder, a piston rod carrying a plunger-head provided with a cutting blade, and dies located below the cutting blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofan oscillating cylinder, an oscillating piston rod carrying a cutting blade, and means for oscillating the cutting blade, and dies located below the cutting blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a reciprocating and swinging or oscillating plunger-head, provided with a cross arm having rollers, the guide plates 11 bars 14 provided with the flaring openings 15, and means for swinging or oscillating the plunger head and butting blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a shape metal cutting-machine, the combination of the arched side members 2,
having journaled thereto an oscillating cyl-- inder, an oscillating piston and rod and head, said piston rod carryinga plunger head, having secured thereto a cutting blade, the cylinders 16 and 17, provided with piston heads and piston rods 18 and 19, and the side plates or guides 11, and dies located below the cutting blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of a base or bed provided with a die block or head, having notches or recesses 33, the clamping bars 24, the connecting rods 25, the cross-bar 26, the links 27, the levers 28, and a cylinder provided with a piston head, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a shape metal cutting machine, an oscillating cylinder pivotally attached to the side members 2, a brace or guide connected to the oscillating cylinder, and provided with the side plates or guides 11, and means for J swinging the plunger head and cutting blade,
and dies, located below the cutting blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a shape metal cutting machine, an oscillating and reciprocating plunger head, having rigidly attached thereto a cutting blade, and dies located below the oscillating and reciprocating plunger head and cutting blade,
substantially as and for the purpose specified.
