Be it known that I, JOHN C. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at IIart'r ford, in thecounty of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ButtonlSetting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for attaching buttons to shoes or fabrics by means of malleable metallic fasteners; and it is especially intended as an improvement upon the button-setting machine shown and described in United States Letters Patent' No.' 381,031, dated April 10, 1888, to which reference may be had.
The object of the invention is to furnish a button-setting machine of improved organization and construction; and especially, to provide an improvedr fastener containing lmagazine and devices for feeding the fasteners from the magazineto the driving-mechan ism, whereby the fasteners may be inserted, one at a time, through the shoe-upper or fabric and the button-eye, and formed into a hookto hold the button to the fabric; and to so combine the magazine with the other elements that the same may be quickly released from its operative position with relation to the driving-mechanism, swung outward into position to be illed, opened and re-filled without removing the same from the machine and without disassembling the parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

The frame of the machine, designated in a h'ollow intermediate frame, A which in turn is supported upon acolumn, A2. In practice, it may sometimes be desirable to dispense with the column A2 and intermediate frame and toybolt'; the main frame A directly upon a table or work-bench. The frame A general way by A, consists, or may consist of TOC Y l has bearings for the vertical presser-slide, S, and is constructed for carrying and pivotally supporting the magazine, M, as will be hereinafter described, and is also provided with bearings for supporting the horizontal shaft which carries the button-feed wheel, F, one of which bearings also forms the head for supporting the die-block, B. The construction of this die-block will be hereinafterfully set forth.
The presser-slide S which is, or may be, of the same general construction as the presserslide similarly designated in Patent No. 381,031, heretofore referred to, is grooved on its rear face to receive the driver D which is supposed to be of the same construction as the driver described in the aforesaid patent. The upper end of said slide is formed to receive the cap, E, whose back cross-bar, Il', shown most clearly in Figs. 7 and 8, forms the rearward wall of the driver-channel, 4c, as more fully described in United States Patent to F. II. Richards, No. 369,260, dated August 30, 1887, to which reference may be had. Said slide is adapted to bear, when in its lowermost position as illustrated in Fig. 7, upon a suitable stop, P, herein shown as a pin secured in the frame of the machine.
As a means for depressing the slide S, in case the same should not descend by its own gravity upon the refractive movement of the driver, the said driver is provided with a projection, 5, which extendsinto atransverse recess in the slide and is adapted, upon the descent of the driver, to strike the lower wall, 5', of, and carry the slide downward with it, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 8 wherein the driver and slide are shown in contact in dotted lines. The driver D which is and may be of the ribbed construction shown and described in Patent No. 369,260 hereinbefore referred to, is formed at its upper end to pass through the usual driver-channel, as a, as shown in Fig. 6a and will be operated by means hereinafter fully described.
The presser-slide S is moved upward by the driver through the medium of a suitableV spring. The preferred construction and arrangement of this feature is as follows:-The slide is bored longitudinally at its upper end to form a seat for, and receive `the pushspring, 6, and the sliding plunger, 7, and has a stopserew, 8, extending transversely through one side thereof, the point of which stop-screw enters a groove, 9, formed in said plunger 7. On the upward movement of the driver its projection 5 strikes the lower end of the plunger 7 which pushes up on the spring 6 and thus lifts the slide S, together with the cap E secured thereto, up against the button-carrier or against the fabric or material laid thereon. In practice, these several parts will be so proportioned and adjusted that the driver will carry a fastener with its point approximately flush with the outer face of the presser-slide before said slide is lifted. This `ceases construction is substantially like the construction shown and described in the Patent No. 381,031 heretofore referred to.
As a means for reciprocating the driver, I employ two parallel vertically reciprocatory and oppositely disposed racks, V and V', respectively, one of which, V, is secured to or formed upon the driver D, and the other V of which is fixed to a driving-rod, V2, journaled in vertical bearings in the frame as shown clearly in Figs. 7 and 8, which drivingrod is reciprocated by a suitable treadle (not shown) through the medium of a connectingrod, V3, pivotally connected to the treadle and driving-rod. Motion is imparted to the driver D by the driving-rod V2 through the medium of a pinion, G, revolubly supported upon a stud, 9', secured to the frame and located intermediate to and with its teeth in mesh with the teeth of the two racks V and V as shown.
In practice, the rack V upon the driver D, the rack V upon the driving-rod, and pinion G will be so disposed relative to each other that when the driving-rod-rack is in its ele- 4vated position the driver will be in its normal or depressed position, as clearly shown in Fig. 7, and vice versa as shown in Fig. 8.
Formed upon the side of the standard 3 of the frame-work, at its front and rear edges, are bearings, 10 and 10', in which bearings are journaled a horizontal shaft, 11, to the front end of which is secured the button-feed wheel F, the construction of which will he hereinafter described. upon said shaft intermediate to said wheel and bearing 10, is a circular die-block B, which die-block is preferably secured to the front face of the said bearing 10 by means of suitable screws,12, as shown in Figs. 18, 10 and 20, and is grooved upon its under side as at 13, to form the clinching-channel for the fasteners, said groove or channel being directly over and in alignment with the driver-channel 4.
For presenting the buttons to the settingdie in proper position to be attached to the fabric,I employ the button-feed wheel or carrier, F, which is somewhat similar. in construction to the feed-wheel described in Patent No. 381,031, referred to. This carrier consists, or may consist, of a disk, 14, having a hub, 14', which `is keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft 11. Said feed-wheel F is grooved transversely at its periphery as shown at 15, to form a series of remotely disposed buttonreceiving seats or carrier grooves herein shown as six in number and arranged equidistantly around the periphery of said wheel. This wheel F is intended to be intermittently rotated to bring the buttons carried in the grooves 15 thereof successively into vertical alignment with the fastener contained in the driver-channel for and in position to be cngaged by said fastener.

near its outer end and having a series of notches, 33, preferably V-shaped formed in its periphery and coinciding in number and position to the lock-notches or grooves formed in the feed-wheel, and a resilient detent-catch, consisting of a spring-arm, 34, secured to the upright 3 of the frame and having a head, 35, adapted to engage the lock-notches in the disk 32 successively as the shaft 11 is rotated to bring the buttons successively into position to be operated upon. The lock-notches will preferably be of V -form so that the head of the detent catch will readily over-ride the faces thereof when force .is applied to rotate the shaft 1l, but will, in consequence, of the shape of said notches and head, and the force of the spring-arm, bring the shaft with its feed-wheel into proper position, even should the actuating mechanism thereof tend to throw the said shaft too far, and will retain `said feed-wheel in a fixed position and prevent movement thereof until force is again applied to its actuating mechanism.

This link is transversely grooved near one edge thereof as shown at 19, and is oscillated by means, preferably, of a bell-crank, designate in-a general way by I, one arm, 20, of which is connected to the ,link 18 by means of a pin, 2l, upon the arm 20 projected into the s lot 19 in said link. As a means for normally forcing the follower inward against the fasteners contained in the channel 67', I have provided two pull-springs, and 76, located one at each side of the follower, and secured at one end thereof to projections, 77 and 77', at the forward end of the magazine, and at their rear ends to pins, 77" and 77"', fixed to the rear end of the follower as clearly shown in the drawings. These springs will preferably extend through tubes, 7S and 7 8' formed upon, or secured to the upper face of the magazine.
As a means for locking the follower in a retracted position to permit re-filling of the magazine, I have provided a spring-actuated detent-catch, 80, at the rear end ofsaidmagazine adapted to engage in a notch, v81,' in the upper face of the forward end ofthe follower when said follower is drawn backward as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 6 of the drawings.
As a means for preventing the fasteners from dropping out of the magazine during the opening and closing movements thereof, I have provided a cover, 82, which is pivoted to theinner face of the main portion of the magazine at one end thereof as shown in Fig 13, and is adapted to be opened and closed by a lateral movement thereof to uncover and cover the fastener-receiving channel 67 in said magazine, said cover having a notch,y 82', formedin one side near one end to engage the shank of a screw, 82", underneath the head thereof to hold this end of the cover against accidental displacement as will be clearly understood by reference to said figure.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the verticallyreciprocating driver, of a horizontallydisposed fastener-magazine consisting of a baseportion and a longitudinally-grooved fastenercarrying portion hinged to one side of the base-portion and pivotally-supported upon the frame at their ends most remote from the driver and adapted to have aswingittg movement at their opposite ends in lines transverse to the line of movement of said driver, a spring-actuatedfollower supported for slidin g movement in the grooved fastener-carrylng portion of the magazine, and means for locking the magazine with its delivering-end 1n operative position adjacent to said driver, substantially as described.
2. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating driver and presser-slide, of a magazine pivotally supported at one end and adapted for transverse movement at one end thereof with relation to the presserslide, and consisting of a base-portion and a longitudinally-groovcd fastener-carrying portion hinged to one side of the base-portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3.I In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating driver and presser-slide, of a magazine comprising a horizontal base-portion pivotallysupported at one end upon the frame', the longitudinally-grooved and channeled fastener-carrying portion hinged to said base-portion at; one side thereof, and a cover adapted to lie intermediate to the base and fastener-carrying portions of the magazine when the same is closed, and means for automatically feeding the fasteners contained 1n the magazine, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the fastener-driving mechanism, of a longitudinallygrooved fastener-carrying magazine terminating at its delivering end adjacent to the fastener-driving mechanism and pivoted at its opposite end to the frame to have a swinging :movement at its delivering end transverse to the plane of movement of the driving-mechanism, and consisting of three members, two of which are hinged together to have a transverse opening movement relative to each other, and the other of which is pivoted at one end between the two aforesaid members so as to have a longitudinal swinging movement with relation to said members, a springactuated follower supported for sliding movement within said magazine, and means substantially as described, for locking the magazine in an operative position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a button-setting machine, the combi nation with the frame and with the verticallyreciprocating driver, of the fastener-carrying magazine terminating at its delivering end adjacent to the driver and pivot-ally supported at its opposite end remote from said driver to have a swinging movement at its delivering end in lines transverse to the line of movement of the driver, a spring catch connected with the frame and adapted for engaging the fastener-magazine to lock the same in its operative position, a spring-actuated follower carried within the magazine, and a detent-catch for locking the follower in its retracted position, substantially as described and for the `purpose set forth.
6. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the verticallyreciprocating driver, of the horizontally-disposed fastener-magazine pivotally-supported at the end thereof most remote from the driver and adapted to have a swinging movement in lines transverse to the line of movement of said drivel', and consisting ol' the baseportion 68, the longitudinallygrooved fastener-carrying port-ion 67 hinged to the baseportion at one side thereof, and a cover S2 piVoted atoue end to the fastener-carrying portion, a spring-actuated follower supported for sliding movement in the longitudinal groove of the fastener-Carr ving portion of the magazine, means for locking the magazine in its operative position in alignment with the driver with its delivering end adjacent thereto, and a spring actuated detent-catch connected with the fastener-carrying portion 67 and adapted for enga-gement with the follower to lock the same in its retracted position, substantially as described.
7. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating presser-slide and fastenerdriver, ot' the horizontally `swinging longitudinally-grooved fastener-carrying magazine pivotally supported upon the frame, the follower supported for sliding movement in the groove of the magazine, means for locking the magazine in alignment with the driver, means for locking the follower in a retracted position, and means for actuating the follower consisting of pull-springs secured at one end to the magazine and at their opposite ends to the follower, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the fastenerdriving mechanism, of a fastener-magazine consisting of the two members 67 and 68 hinged together at one side and pivotally supported for horizontal circular movement upon the frame, (one of said members being grooved longitudinally to receive button-fasteners as described) a cover movably secured to the inner face of oneqof said members, a spring-actuated followersupported forslding movement intermediate to the one member and its cover, and means for locking said follower in its retracted position, ali substantially as and for the purpose described.
9. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating driver and presser-slide, of the longitudinally grooved fastener carrying magazine pivotallysupported at one end upon the frame and adapted for transverse movement at one end with relation to the presserslide and driver, a spring-actuated follower carried in said magazine, and ad resilient cutoff plate secured to the magazine at its discharging end, and means for automatically retracting the cut-off plate as the magazine is swung into alignment with the driver, substantially as described.y
lO. In'a button-setting machine,tl1c combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating driver and presser-slide,of a pivotally-supported magazine having a longitudinal fastener-receiving groove formed therein from end to end and adapted to be swung away from the driver and presser-slide, substantially as described, a spring-actuated sliding follower carried in the magazine, a springactuated cut-off plate-secured to the forward end of the magazine in position to cover the discharge-opening therein when the magazine is swung outward with relation to the presserslide and having a projection or abutment thereon, and an abutment upon the frame located in position to engage the projection upon and retract the cut-off plate when the magazine is swung into its-operative position, substantially as described.
ll. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame andwith the vertically reciprocating driver and presser-slide, of the longitudinally grooved fastener carrying magazine pivotally supported for horizontal circular movement upon the frame, a spring catch secured to the frame and adapted to engage and lock the magazine in its operative position, a spring cut-off plate secured to the magazine at its forward end and adapted for preventing the discharge of the fasteners contained in said magazine when the same is swung outward with relation to the presserslide, a spring-actuated follower carried in said magazine, and a detent catch secured to the magazine and adapted to engage and lock the follower in a retracted position, all substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
l2. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the vertically reciprocating driver, of the horizontally-disposed fastener-magazine, pivotally-supported at the end thereof most remote from the driver and adapted to have a swinging movementin lines transverse to the line of movement of said driver, and consisting of thefbase-portion 68, the longitudinaliy-grooved fastenercarrying portion 67 hinged at one side thereof, and a cover 82 pivoted at one end to the fastener-carrying portion', and a spring-actuated follower supported for slidingI movement in the longitudinal groove of the fastener-carrying portion of the magazine, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
13. In a button-setting machine, the combination with the frame and with the'vertically longitudinally grooved fastener carrying magazine pivotally supported for horizontal circular movement upon the frame, the fastener-feeding follower sliding in the groove of the magazine, a follower-actuator consisting of two spiral springs located one at either side of the follower in tubes formed upon or secured to the magazine, and secured at their forward ends to the forward end of the magazine, and at their rear ends tothe rear end of the follower, and means for locking the follower in a retracted position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
'14. In a button-setting machine, t-hecombination with the frame and Vreciprocating driver and with the fastener-magazine pivotally-supportedthereon with its delivering end adjacent to the driver, of the vertically reciprocating presser-slide S, the cap removablysecured thereto and overlapping the delivering end of the fastener-magazine, and means for locking said cap to the presser-slide consisting of a key revolubly-supported in contiguous semi-circular grooves formed in the adjacent faces of the cap and slide, and a spring bearing against said key to hold the same with portions thereof in engagement with the cap and slide, substantially as described.

In a button-setting machine, the combijournaled in the frame, the pinion rotated by said rod and the driver actuated by the pinion, of the horizontal button-feed-wheel shaft in axial alignment with the magazine when in. its operative position, and means for intermittently rotating said shaft consisting of a ratchet-wheel secured thereto, an oscillating link looselymounted upon the shaft and carrying a vspring-actuated pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, a lever engaging said link, a connecting-rod pivoted to said lever and directly connected with a sleeve shiftably secured to the driving-rod, and means for actuating the driving-rod, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
