BUNG FORBARRBLS.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT )EEICEo MICHAEL STANGL, OF MUNICH, GERMANY.
e BUNG FOR BARRELS.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,832, dated January 22, 1895.
Application filed March 23,1894. Serial No. 504,765. (No model.) Patented in Germany August 1, 1893,11'0. 74,105.
To all whom, t may concern/.3
Be it known that I, MICHAEL STANGL, of Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs for Barrels, (for which I have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 74,105, dated August l, 1893,) of which the following is a'speciiication'.
This invention relates to a bung for barrels which is so constructed as to form a tight joint, both before and after the insertion of the spigot. v
The accompanying drawing represents a longitudinal central section of my improved bung.
The letter a, represents an annular metal bushing provided with the exterior thread n,
` adapted to engage the walls of the bung-hole. The bushing a, tapers from top to bottom and is at its upper end provided with the interior thread n', that engages the threaded metal bung b. This bung is, at its lower end provided with a reduced section or offset b. Be-
introduced into the bung hole, the plug c, is driven into the bushing and nally the bung b, is screwed into place. The reduced section b', of the bung will thus enter the mortise f, of plug c, and will crowd against the wallsof such plug, lso as to press it against the bushing a. In this way a very tight packing is obtained,
When the barrel is to be tapped, the bung is unscrewed and the spigot is driven home through the plug c, so as to crush the bottom plate of such plug. The walls of the plug however will remain intact and/will constitute a packing for the spigot and produce an absolutely tight joint.
What I claim is- The combination of a bushing with a bung having a tapering offset at its lower end and with a mortised wooden plug having a destructible base and a tapering side wall that embraces the taperingoffset, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
MICHAEL STANGL.
Witnesses:
ALBERT WEICKMANN, C. MAYER.
