To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS J. rW. WALL, a citizen of the United'statesesiding in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Savings-Banks, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a savings bank or box from which it is impossible to 'abstract the money contained therein,

except the box be unlocked or broken. 'v

To this end my invention generally stated consists in a savings bank or box provided with a removable top having a suitable .coinslot, a chute and a pivoted guard, whereby' it is impossible to abstract the money from the safe. n

I' design to have the savings box kept at the home or place of business of bank depositors, and the keys of the boxes retained by the officials of the bank, so thatdepositors cannot gain access to the interior of the box without taking it to the officials of the bank. The box is to be taken to the bank when filled, andthe contents thereof deposited lin the bank to the credit of the depositor.

My invention will be best understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a front' elevation, partlyin sec! tion, of asavings bank or box, provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of a detail, showing the pivoted guard and chute, the same being takenon'the plane of the line S-Sof Fig. 2.

The same marks of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views.

1 is a stout box of iron or other suitable material. The front side 5 thereof is preferably made separate and its edges 6 are turned over as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bottom and sides 7 of the box are preferably made Of one piece of metal and riveted or otherwise permanently fastened to the turned-over edges 6 of the front 5. edge of the top 8 takesunder the turned-over edge 6A at the top of the box, and a 1ip;9 at the rear side of the top 8 comes against the upper edge of the rear side7 of the box. The top is provided with a lock 10 on its under side, the key-barrel 11 of the lock projecting upon the outside of the top. The lock has a bolt 12 which engages with a shoulder 18 on the rear side 7 near the top of the box. The bolt 12 holds the top securely to the box and when the bolt is withdrawn from the shoulder 13,4 the top may be lifted off the box, and access Ahad to the interior thereof. The top is also provided with short posts 14., into recesses in which, the ends of a bent rod 15 may be sprung to provide a suitable handle The under side of the top has secured to it a chute 16, consisting of a perforated inclined plate and side pieces 17. The fourth or open side of the chute is provided with a pivoted guard 18 swung upon a rod' 19 supported by the side pieces 17. The pivoted guard is furnished with a spring 20, one edge of which is secured to a lug 2l'on the inclined perforated plate, and the other end thereof fastened to one of the side pieces 17, the said spring helping to hold rthe'guard away from the chute at its upper part. Between the chute and the normal position of the pivoted guard is a slot 22 out in' the top 8 of the box, into which slot the coin is deposited. The chute 16 at its lower end may befashioned into fingers 23, andthe pivoted guard 18 may also be fashioned into fingers 24 at its lower end which come between the ingers23'of the chute. The normal position of the pivoted guard is such that the fingers of the pivoted guard and chute overlap or interlock, sor that the coin which is already, deposited in the box cannot be made to pass up the chute and out the slot by inverting the box. i y t The pivoted guard at itsupper endl is provided with a slightly curvedplate 25 adapted to swing under and close the slot 22, when the lingers at the lower end of the pivoted guard have moved away from the fingers 24. at the lower end of the chute, but normally the plate y25 uncovers the slot 22.

The operation ofthe device is as follows; A coin being deposited in the slot 22 passes through the same down the chute 16. and there is never a clear open passage from the interior of the box through the slot. arrangement is such however, as not to inter ferewith the introduction of coin into the box, but only to prevent the coin from being abstracted from thebox by way of` the slot.
