SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,253, dated January 8, 1 895. Application filed January 2, 1894- gerial No. 495.344 (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALGERAUS O. WATSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at; London, in the county of Madison and State of .Ohio, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in School-House Constrnction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in school house construction and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction in school buildings of that character which are not built for the accommodation of graded classes in separate rooms, such as school buildings ordinarily constructed in country districts; to provide ordinary one roomed schoolbuildings with a recitation room which shall be cut 0E from the study room and from whichone teacher may observe the scholars in both rooms; to 'provide in combination therewith study booths and to produce other improvements in detail of construction Which will be more specifically pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a school building and room having my improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the building on line as a: of Fig. 1.

a represents the walls of a school building of the class which is ordinarily provided with one room and wherein the school is intended to be presided over by one teacher. From one of the end Walls of the building and extending inwardly parallel with the side walls thereof, I provide 'a partition wall I) of any usual or well known construction. This partition wall which, as shown, is preferably arranged at one side of the center of the width of the building, extends as shown partly across the main floor and terminates at a doorway b, said doorway being formed between the end of said partition b and one end of a glass partition b As shown in the drawings, the inner end of this glass partition I; is on the line of the partition I) from which point said glass partition extends obliquely outward to meet the front or opposite wall of the building from that which is met by the partition b,
thus providing in one end of the room a which is cut off by said partitions, a flaring enlargement at one'end and on one side thereof.

9 represents the main entrance to the building and the rows of dotted lines g indicate the seating arrangementin the larger or genseating arrangement mightbe readilychanged without affecting the character or principle of my invention, and that the entrance 9 might be changed to any other desirable point.
It is well known that one of the difliculties of conducting schools of the class above mentioned arises from the fact that classes of difierent grades recite in the same room as that occupied by the remainder of the students and that the studentsnot in class have their attention attracted from their studies by such recitations and that where a separate recitation room is used and but one teacher is employed the scholars not engaged in recitation are left without a teacher to watch over them. These difficulties I obviate by the construction of the room 0 which may be used as a recitation room and which at thesame time is of such construction and arrangement as to admit of the teacher standing in the larger end thereof adjacent to the inclined transparent partition section and overlooking both rooms. It is evident that the members of the class reciting may arrange themselveseither in the position shown by the dotted line 0 or in any other desirable or convenient position behind the solid partition I). By this construction and arrangement it will not only be seen that the teacher may overlook both rooms from one point, but that the students by their exercises in one room cannot attract the attention f those of the other.
Along one or more sides of the original or ventilation through the medium of windows eral room 01, although it is evident that this It is evident that ordinary one or two roomed school buildings may be readily provided at a low expense with the combined solid and transparent partitions herein described and it will also be seen that the study booths or compartments will be of great service as private study rooms for scholars who are easily annoyed or whose attention is readily attracted from their studies by other students. Although the partition herein described is shown as running from the rear to the front wall of the building, it is evident that this partition may extend between any two of the building walls the character of the building will most readily permit.
If additional light is necessary to the room, it is evident that the same may be had by the arrangement of one or more suitable skylights h h" in the roof and ceiling of the building.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
frame, of a partition therefor consisting of an,
opapue section b and a flaring or inclined transparent section b of study booths or compartments arranged about one or more sides of one or both of the rooms thus formed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
