Description

Patented Jan. 8, 1895.
WRENCH.

JOHN H. IIIMES, ()F MILWAUKEE, W'ISOONSIN.
WR E
NCH.
srncrrrcn'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,061, dated January 8,1895.
Application filed February 23,1894. Serial No. 501,088- v(1T0 model.)
Be it knownthat I, J oniv HQHIMES, a citi-' zen of the United States, and a resident of MilofMilwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in renches;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical wrench especially dc signed for work in'limited space; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter specified with reference to the accompanying drawings 1 5 andsubsequently claimed.
'In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wrench constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2, a .plan view of the same partly in horizontal section on line 2-2of the preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings A represents a handle constituting part of my wrench, one end of this handle being forked.
Loose ona pivot B connecting the branches b of the'handle is a disk 0 ripheral ratchet-teeth c and an angular recess d, the latter being for the reception of anut or bolt-head. A pawl D loose on apivot E between the branches of the handle enga es with the ratchet portion of the disk, and a flat-spring F made fast at one end to said handle bears against the pawl to hold the latter in engagement with said disk.
Each of the disk and pawl pivots is prefers ably-provided with a slotted and tapered head provided with pethat engages a countersunk opening in oneof the handle branches, and the opposite end of .said pivot is preferably screw-threaded to engage a tapped opening in the otherof said handle-branches,
' Itis intended that the disk hereinshown shall be interchangeable with others having recesses of greater or less area,-and by means of supplemental openings e in the handlebranches, provision is .madefor moving the pivot E farther forward tothereby bring the pawl D into engagement with the ratchetportion of a disk havingconsiderably less diameter than the one herein shown.- M v I By, means of the above'wrench, bolt-heads or nuts may be turned in places where an ordinary wrench cannot be-utilized for lack of room.
Having now described my invention, what Patent, is-- v A'wrench comprising a handle, an interchangeable angularly recessed and ratchettoothed disk pivotally connected to the handle, an adjustable pivot, and a pawl on this pivot for engagement with the ratchet portion of the disk, substantially asset forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoingl have hereunto set myhand, at Milwaukee, in
cousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
