WEIGHING ATTACHMENT FOR PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,886, dated January 1, 1 895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE WHEELER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at. Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful VVerghing Attachment for Pails, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in weighing buckets.
I'Ieretofore weighing buckets have been employed, and have been provided with spring balances for indicating the weight of the contents of the bucket; but the spring balances have been arranged at and connected with the terminals of the bail or handle, and have served as the connection between the bail or handle and the body of the vessel. Difficulty has been experienced with the spring balances in this arrangement, as the springs are liable to get out of order through unnecessary strain, and fastening devices are required for connecting the terminals of the bail or handle securely and unyieldin gl y with the body of the bucket or vessel.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the above objections, and to provide a simple and inexpensive spring balance attachment, which will permit the terminals of a bail or handle to be connected with abucket or similar vessel in the usual manner to avoid unnecessarily straining and weakening the spring, and which may be readily brought into operative position when desired.
The invention consists in the construction, novel combination and arrangement of parts herinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bucket provided with a spring balance attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the handle being swung down against one side of the bucket. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, illustrating the construction of the spring balance. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective view of the graduated scale bar.

constructed of any suitable material and provided at opposite sides with ears 2, of any desired construction, and having hingedly connected with them the terminals of a swinging bail or handle 3, preferably constructed of wire or similar material. The handle or bail is provided with a vertically offset portion 4, consisting of a rectangular bend, and located therein and arranged beyond the curved portions of the bail or handle is a spring balance. The top cross piece 5, of the rectangular bend is slightly flattened and is provided with a perforation 6, through which passes a graduated scale bar 7. The upper or outer end of the scale bar is provided with a perforation receiving a finger ring or handle 8, by which the bucket is supported when it is desired to bring the spring balance into operation; and below the ring 8, is located an annular flange or shoulder 9, which normally rests on the outer face of the flattened cross piece 5, to limit the inward or downward movement of the scale bar. The lower end of the scale bar 7, is threaded and is provided with a nut 10, and a spiral spring is arranged on the scale bar and interposed between the nut 10 and the cross piece 5; and by adjusting the nut 10, the balance may be maintained perfectly accurate. The graduated scale bar is designed to bear a series of numbers indicating pounds, ounces, 8cm, whereby the weight of the contents of the bucket may be readily ascertained.
It will be seen that the terminals of the bail are attached to the body of the bucket in the ordinary manner and that the said handle or bail may be readily grasped in the ordinary manner when it is desired to carry orlift the bucket, without affecting the spring balance, and that fastening devices for looking the spring balance out of operation are dispensed with. It will also be apparent that the spring balance may be quickly and readily applied to a bail constructed with an offset bend as shown, in order that the spring balance may be transferred from one bucket to another.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or IOC sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is 1. A vessel having a bail, provided intermediate of its terminals with an outwardly offset bend, combined with a spring balance located Wholly Within the bend and passed through the bail, and provided with a handle or ring, substantially as described.
2. A vessel having a swinging bail, provided intermediate of its ends with an outwardly offset bend, and having at the outer end thereof a perforation, combined with a scale bar passing through the perforation, an adjusting nut arranged at the inner end of the scale bar, and a spring disposed on the scale bar and interposed between the nut and the outer end of the bend, substantially as described.
A vessel having a swinging bail provided with a central outwardly offset rectangular bend, having a flattened cross piece 5 provided with a perforation, combined with a scale bar arranged in the perforation and having its inner end threaded, and provided beyond the cross piece 5 with a shoulder, a spring located Within the bend and arranged on the scale bar, an adjusting nut arranged on the inner end of the scale bar, and a ring located at the outer end thereof, substantially as described.
