To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RUTH NEWEY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patchogue, in, the county of Sudolk and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cane-Umbrellas,of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to simplify the construction and operation of cane umbrellas and the invention resides in the'novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the u mbrella open. Fig. 2 is a like elevation of the umbrella closed. Fig. 3 is a section along m Fig. 1

A is the stick of the umbrella. B is the runner from which extend the stretchers O and D is the head which is fixed to the stick A and to which the ribs E are hinged in the usual manner. The cover II is applied as well known.

To the bottom end of the stick A is firmly secured a plug F which fits into the hollow cane or handle G and is provided with a lip adapted to engage a catch 11 fastened to the cane or stafif G.

The runner B is provided with a plug 12 which fits the hollow cane G and is provided with a rim 13 forming a stop which abuts against the edge of the hollow cane.

When the umbrella is closed it can be in serted into the hollow cane until the rim 13 of the plug 12 strikes the edge of the cane and when it has reached this position, the catch 11 engages the head I) so as to retain the umbrella in position. The cane is provided with a knob or handle 14 which forms its top when the cane is used for walking and its bottom when the umbrella is open.

The runner B travels between the oppositely located head D and plug I and when the umbrella is open the plug of the runner abutting against handle G- holds the umbrella head D projecting beyond the handle. By releasing catch 11 and drawing the umbrella stick out of the handle or cane, the umbrella can be closed by moving runnerB toward plug F and when the closed umbrella now has its head D inserted into the hollow cane or staff, said head forms a lip for engagement of the catch V 11 and the runner plug abutting against the cane will hold the plug F projecting beyond the cane so that said plug F will form the lower end of the cane as seen in Fig. 2.

As the umbrella whether open or closed is inserted into the hollow cane from only one end, the other end of the cane can remain permanently closed and does not require any temporary closing device such as a removable plug, or screw cap or the like.

To open the umbrella the catch 11 is moved to release head D and the umbrella having been withdrawn from the handle or case G is reversed so that the plug F enters the case G, the rim l3 resting or abutting against said case, and the stick A is then pushed toward the catch 11 so that the latter will engage and hold plug F, this motion of the stick A bringing the head D toward runner B so that the umbrella is opened.

- c What I claim as new, and desire to secure be inserted in the handle and provided with a runner having a plug, the opposite ends of which are adapted to be inserted in the bandle, said plug being provided intermediate its ends with an annular rim which abuts against the open end of the hollow handle in both the open and closed position of the umbrella, sub stantial'ly as described.

2. In a cane umbrella, the combination with ahollow handle, of an umbrella adapted to be inserted in the handle, said umbrella having a stick provided at one end with a fixed plug and with a runner carrying a second plug, the latter plug having its opposite ends reduced to fit within the handle and provided intermediate its ends with an annular rim which abuts against the open end of the hollow bandle in both the open and closed position of the umbrella, and a catch carried by the umbrella and operating to engage the fixed plug and hold the umbrella stick in said handle, substantially as described.

3.
