Beit known that I, HENRY O. Incnnnan, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in 'lransfer- Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in transfer-cars designed to carryladen or empty cars from one track to another. For instance, my improved transfer-car is well adapted for receiving-cars laden with brick at a brick- 5 machine and then carrying such brick-laden cars to a track in the dry house that is usually composed of severaltunnels havingtracks extendinglengthwise of the tunnels, th e briokladen cars being carried by the transfer-car z o to the track leading into a drying-tunnel, and, upon the completion of the drying process, being taken from the opposite end of the tunnel onto the transfer-car, and thence to the kiln in which the product is burned. It is 2 5 obvious that any appliance or attachment to the transfer-car, that will facilitate the movement of the transfer-car, such, for instance, as stopping at the right place, so as to bring the track on the transfer-car into line or reg- 0 isteriug-position with the track onto which or from which the car on the transfer-car is to be taken, is of great value in saving time and labor.
I would remark that by present practice of 3 5 moving transfer-cars, the operator stoops over and pushes on the corner of the loaded car in order to move it, and to chuck or sprig the wheels by placing blocks on the track or a short stick between the spokes to stop the movement, and then employing some mechanical means, such for instance, as a latch to assist in holding the transfer-car in position while a car is run onto or off from, the transfer-car.
4 5 My present invention consists, primarily, of"
a brake applied to the transfer car and at tached to a handle whereby to push or pull the car to the desired position, with the arrangement of parts such that, as the operator 5o raises the handle into position to push or pull the car, the brake is automatically released,
so that when the operator frees the handle,
as required when the transfer car is in position with the track thereon in line or registering position with the track to or from which 5; a car, from or onto the transfer-car, respectively, is to be taken, the handle drops, and, by
its own weight sets or applies the brake.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a transfer-car embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan, portions being broken away in Fig. 1, to reduce the size of the figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the wheels of the car, the same being shown ar- 6 ranged in pairs at opposite ends of the cars, and mounted upon axles B.
A represents the treads ot' the wheels, and U designates the frame that connects the axles with each other, and supports a track D ar: ranged transversely of the car, and adapted to receive a car laden with brick or other material, which track D is adapted to register with the track to and from which a car transferred by the transfer-car, is adapted to be taken.
My improved transfer-car, at one end, is provided with a bail-shaped handle E, that, at
"the treads of the adjacent pair of wheels of the car, is provided with brake-shoes G that are pivotally secured to the handle, as at g, and adapted to frictionally en gage the treads of the Wheels. The handle, at its ends, is pivotally secured, as at e, to arms or brackets G rigid with the frame-work of the car, pref- 8 5 erably integral with the journal-boxes that bear the axle having the wheels adapted to be engaged by the brake-shoes. The pivotal bearings of the handle are, however, out of line with the axis of said wheels and axle, said pivotal bearings being located preferably between the axis of said wheels and axle and the brake-shoes borne by the handle, so that the latter and consequently the brake-shoes,-
in the oscillation of the handle, are swung or 5 nwved eccentricallyto the treads of the wheels, and the arrangement of parts is such that when the handle is raised into position for pulling or pushing the transfer-car, the brakeshoes are disengaged from the wheels, and the handle, when freed, drops or oscillates downwardly by gravity, until the brake-shoes engage the treads of the wheels, resulting in the braking of the car by means of said shoes and instantly arresting the movement of the car, and holding the car in the desired position until the handle is again raised preparatory to moving the ear to another location. A stop for limiting the upward oscillation or movement of the handle is preferably provided and consists, preferably, in a lug or projecting-member C formed upon the journalboxes or members to which the handle is pivoted, the arrangement of parts being such that said stops shall be adapted to engage the ends of the handle when the latter is oscillated up wardly to release the brakes, and thereby limit the oscillation of the handle in that direction.
I would here remark that the transfer-car is preferably provided with arms or brackets C and one or more stops 0 at each end of the car, as shown, so that the brake-bearinghandle can be applied to either end of the car.
hat I claim is In a transfer-car, a handle pivotally secured to the car, one or more brake-shoes attached to the handle and adapted to frictionally engage or brake the adjacent wheel or wheels of the car, the axis of the handle being located between the axis of said wheel or wheels and the portion of the tread of the wheel adapted to be engaged by the brake-shoe, the arrangement of parts being such that the brake-shoe is released upon the oscillation or elevation of the handle to pull or push the cars and is set or applied upon dropping or releasing the handle, and a stop for limiting the movement of the handle in the direction in which said handle is moved to render said brake-shoe inoperative, substantially as set forth.
