To all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, JOHN W. BRAYMAN, of Silver Springs, in the county of Wyoming, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Edge-Setting Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to edge-setting machines, used in the manufacture of shoes.
My object is to produce an edge-setter, in which the edge-iron is vibrated rapidly, back and forth; and in which the edge-iron is reversible,the iron being heated in the ordinary manner; and in which the edge irons are mounted in arms connected to a rock-shaft actuated by a cam or eccentric shaft, driven by power. It is constructed as follows, refer-.
ence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2, is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a top plan of the rock-shaft-, the cam-shaft and the connections whereby the rock-shaft is operated to vibrate the arms which carry the edge-irons. Fig. 4, is a front elevation of part of the rocking or vibratory shaft, and an Fig. 5, is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 6, is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 7, is a sectional elevation of the rock-shaft, the camshaft, and the slotted connection. Fig. 8, is a detail of part of the cam or eccentric shaft.

Arms hare secured to or are integral with the shaft e and in each arm the edge- .iron m-is mounted, having a head m' adapted to be held between the lips m"- upon the lower extremities of these vibratory arms, and prevented from changing its position thereby, said head being provided with 'an oblong point m" transverse to it. spring -n engages with the shank of said edge-iron, to hold said iron in place; but by pressing down upon said shank, its head is released from said lips, or 'jaw, and then said iron can be rotated to bring eitherthe broad or the narrow face of said iron into use, as desired. Finger hooks pare mounted upon the arms -'a.- in the usual manner. Also the irons are heated by means of the gas pipe rand its branches. 1
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an edge setter, a standard, a drive shaft, journaled thereon, an eccentric upon the shaft, a rock shaft journaled parallel to the drive shaft, a vertically oscillatedarm secured atone end to the rock shaft and journaled at the other end upon said eccentric; vertical tubular tool holder secured at an angle to said rock shaft and provided with projecting lips and an edge iron mounted in said holder and having a head fitting between said lips and adapted to be removed from engagement therewith to be rotated.
